Job Overview Public Safety Officer (PSO) patrols the assigned area to prevent crime and detect violations of the law. The role performs journey‑level duties or entry‑level special agent duties. Individuals with more than six months experience in law enforcement may be considered a Master Public Safety Officer. The PSO responds to complaints, investigates alleged or suspected violations of criminal law, conducts surveillances, performs undercover assignments, develops and uses informants, interviews witnesses and suspects, directs traffic and controls crowds, and performs general police work such as maintaining order during emergencies, participating in manhunts, and providing executive protection. The PSO also testifies in court, keeps records, plans and directs law‑enforcement activities, and provides guidance and training to other law‑enforcement personnel.
Responsibilities
Patrol assigned area to prevent crime and detect violations of the law.
Respond to complaints and requests for assistance.
Issue warnings and citations; apprehend and arrest violators.
Investigate alleged or suspected violations, conduct surveillances, and perform undercover assignments.
Develop and use informants; conduct background or administrative investigations.
Interview witnesses and suspects.
Direct traffic and control crowds.
Maintain order during emergencies, participate in manhunts, and provide executive protection.
Testify in court and other legal proceedings; prosecute defendants in magistrate’s court.
Keep records and make reports pertaining to activities.
Plan, direct, and coordinate law‑enforcement activities within designated area.
Execute orders from superiors, explain orders, messages, and decisions to subordinates, and advise subordinates of changes.
Provide guidance and on‑the‑job training to other personnel.
Monitor patrol activities and recommend changes to improve effectiveness.
Supervise and evaluate law‑enforcement personnel.
Minimum Requirements
A high school diploma.
Certification by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Training Council (Section 23‑23‑40).
Must pass a background check.
Some positions require a commercial driver’s license.
For the Master Public Safety Officer role: six months experience in law enforcement.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
Ability to lift materials up to 50 lbs unassisted.
Ability to lift, drag, and pull persons up to 300 lbs assisted.
Ability to hear and recognize alarms and verbal summons.
Maintain 20/40 vision (corrected).
Climb stairs to top floor of any building.
Maintain olfactory sense.
Carry heavy objects or persons a distance of 15–20 ft in emergencies.
Engage in physical confrontations with suspected offenders.
Run for extended distances.
Sit/drive a patrol vehicle for extended periods.
Ride a bicycle for extended periods.
Kneel, bend, climb ladders.
Work at heights up to maximum building height.
Additional: Obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license; computer literacy; work overtime as required.
