Do you have a passion for safety and environmental compliance? Grand Traverse Container is seeking a motivated Safety/Environmental Technician for our Traverse City facility. Grand Traverse Container has been manufacturing custom corrugated packaging since 1995 and is known for its responsive customer service and strong growth.
Primary Purpose The Safety/Environmental Technician ensures proper safety and environmental practices in the plant, administers the safety program, and ensures compliance with state and federal environmental policies and regulations.
Responsibilities
Inspects the facility to identify safety, health, and environmental risks.
Develops and implements inspection policies and procedures, and schedules routine inspections.
Develops health and safety procedures for all areas of the company.
Prepares and schedules training to cover emergency procedures, workplace safety, and other relevant topics.
Monitors compliance with safety procedures.
Drafts inspection reports to document findings.
Ensures that Material Safety Data Sheets are maintained and readily accessible.
Maintains records of discharge of employee exposure to hazardous waste and/or pollutants as required.
Establishes a culture of safety by executing company safety plans and enforcing policies.
Facilitates safety training and conducts safety meetings with leaders and plant employees.
Exhibits a professional manner in dealing with others, working to maintain constructive working relationships.
Works with new employees to communicate our safety and quality culture and assess their training needs.
Participates in environmental and safety audits.
Performs other duties as assigned to meet business needs.
Knowledge and Skills
Ability to identify and define problems and create solutions.
Extensive knowledge of environmental regulations and policies.
Proficiency with precision measuring tools.
Ability to communicate with others to ensure coordination of other functions such as operator training, machine calibration, communication of quality and safety guidelines.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Proficiency with computers and appropriate software.
Contributes to building a positive team spirit and morale to foster group commitment to goals and objectives.
Capable of managing competing demands with the ability to adjust approach or method to best fit the situation.
Able to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events in a positive manner.
Dependability—commits to long hours of work when necessary to reach goals; completes tasks on time or notifies appropriate person with an alternate plan.
Physical Demands
Employee is regularly required to walk, talk, and hear.
Ability to regularly lift or move 25 lb and occasionally lift and move up to 50 lb.
Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Overtime is required with occasional weekends.
Education and Experience Experience working with manufacturing-based technology, processes and principles is preferred; computer proficient. OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certified; 3 years’ experience in corrugated manufacturing preferred but not required. Salary $58,656 – $65,000 per year
