Purpose The Pet Stylist’s primary purpose is to perform expert‑level professional grooming services, including bathing, drying, brushing, haircuts and styling, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and gland cleaning. The Pet Stylist prioritizes the safety, comfort, and well‑being of pets in our care and delivers a high level of customer satisfaction and service to pet parents. Additional tasks may be assigned by the Grooming Salon Leader, Solutions Manager, or Store General Manager. This is an excellent opportunity for groomers with proven technical experience to grow their expertise and productivity.
Essential Job Functions
Under moderate to limited supervision, perform professional grooming services—including bathing, drying, brushing, haircuts and styling, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and gland cleaning—according to pet parent’s instructions and adhering to breed standards and company policies.
Operate and maintain grooming instruments (clippers, blades, shears, brushes, dryers).
Prioritize the well‑being and safety of every animal, monitor pets for discomfort or injury, and promptly report concerns.
Evaluate individual needs of each pet, considering coat type, skin conditions, temperament.
Interact professionally with pet parents, provide optimal customer service, address inquiries, offer recommendations, and resolve questions.
Educate pet parents on grooming maintenance and at‑home care practices and products.
Maintain a clean and safe grooming area, disinfect tools, perform daily and weekly cleaning, and adhere to Petco hygiene policies.
Apply knowledge of Petco’s grooming policies and guidelines to ensure safety, quality, and consistency.
May train, support, and supervise entry‑level trainees when a Grooming Salon Leader is absent.
Education/Experience
Completion of the Pet Stylist Apprentice program with Petco, or prior experience as a professional groomer or completion of a technical grooming training program.
High‑school diploma or GED preferred, though not required.
Independent judgment and problem‑solving ability for routine to moderately complex situations.
Results‑driven with commitment to productivity, performance, and ownership of role.
Strong attention to detail, ensuring grooming services meet highest standards.
Genuine passion for animals and desire to continue a career in pet grooming.
Expert knowledge of dog breeds, grooming requirements, common health issues, and behaviors.
Proficiency in breed‑specific cuts, styling techniques, and grooming standards.
Strong verbal and written communication skills for interactions with pet parents and team members.
Capability to handle pets of all sizes and temperaments with care and empathy.
Availability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as required.
Work Environment The majority of duties are conducted indoors in the grooming salon. The position requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 pounds as necessary), and standing for long periods. It may involve exposure to heights using a two‑step ladder or other support tools. The work environment can be noisy and wet.
