Job Title Emergency Care Attendant Acadian Air Med – Houston, TX

Summary Provide appropriate, efficient and timely pre‑hospital basic life support care and transportation of the sick and injured in accordance with local, state, national and Acadian Ambulance standards of practice.

Special Notation

When working on an ambulance, the ECA is paired with another medical provider holding at least Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. The EMT rides in the patient compartment with all patients.

"Shuttle vehicle" is used interchangeably with "ambulance" when the ECA operates a shuttle vehicle for non‑emergency, ambulatory patients.

Equipment Ambulance, stretcher (folding, scoop, long spine board), spinal immobilization equipment, radios and computerized communications equipment, pager, splinting devices, suction devices, bandaging materials, oxygen bottles and tubing, basic airway management devices, fire extinguishers, simple extrication devices, mechanical tools, blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, patient restraints, and other medical/related items as added.

Duties and Responsibilities

Conduct a careful examination of the patient for signs and symptoms of illness/injury and assist other medical personnel as necessary.

Administer prompt and efficient basic life support care within limits of licensure/certification and approved protocols prior to transport.

Provide careful handling of the patient to and from the ambulance.

Transport the patient safely in the ambulance to the medical facility.

Transfer patient and care information to receiving personnel at the destination.

Perform regular unit inventory and equipment testing to ensure all equipment is present, clean, and functional.

After transport, complete all duties that return the ambulance and equipment to service.

Maintain full knowledge of the ambulance’s basic life support equipment and its proper use.

Document and report all needed repairs to maintenance departments and supervisors.

Operate/drive the ambulance safely and efficiently, following company driving guidelines and ensuring occupant safety.

Follow FCC regulations when communicating via electronic equipment.

Attend all mandatory meetings as scheduled.

Complete assigned station duties, including grounds, supply orders, cleaning, and reporting/logging tasks.

If an approved preceptor, precept new employees and ECA students as directed.

Meet all qualifications, requirements, functions, and responsibilities outlined in the job description.

Perform any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED.

State certification as an Emergency Care Attendant per state requirements.

Current CPR certification (American Heart Association).

Valid state‑issued driver’s license (equivalent to a Louisiana Class “D”).

Professional written and verbal communication skills; ability to write simple reports and present information to employees and managers.

Knowledge of company protocols, operating procedures, and safety policies.

Ability to drive large vehicles in normal and adverse conditions.

Training Requirements

Orientation to job requirements.

Physical Demands Must perform strenuous physical requirements, including lifting and moving heavy equipment and patients, performing CPR and other lifesaving maneuvers, and operating in various environmental conditions. Specific abilities include:

Climb stairs and structures, work without limitation in close and dangerous environments, and operate in damaged vehicles or structures on fire.

Fine motor skills for bandaging, splinting, and other procedures.

Correctable vision for safe vehicle operation, reading gauges, and color discrimination.

Adequate hearing for patient, family, and emergency personnel communication even in noisy environments.

Clear speech for communicating in stressful and distracting conditions.

Work Environment Situations can include hazardous materials, electrical emergencies, vehicular accidents, outdoor emergency settings, hurricanes, tornadoes, industrial accidents, and high‑risk environments such as exposure to toxins, explosives, and radiation. Noise levels may range from moderate to very loud. Employees must be prepared for wet, humid, or extreme temperature conditions.
