Whisper Hill Farm is a certified organic vegetable farm located in beautiful Scottsville, Virginia. Entering our 17th season, we intensively grow 5 acres of certified organic vegetables. You can find our seasonal harvest, from vibrant greens to delicious tomatoes, through our convenient credit‑based CSA program and local farmers' markets in the Charlottesville area.
We are committed to sustainable and responsible farming practices. Our fields are certified organic, meaning we utilize healthy ecological methods—including crop rotation and cover crops—while proudly avoiding all synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and GMOs. This commitment ensures our produce is fresh, flavorful, and healthy for both our customers and the local ecosystem.
At the core of our operation is a strong set of values: we believe that hard work and efficiencies allow us to bring the highest quality products from our fields directly to our customers. We also firmly champion diversity, inclusion, and equity within our team and our community, striving to create a welcoming and fair environment for everyone who interacts with our farm.
Position: Farm Crew Member As a farm crew member, you will gain comprehensive, hands‑on experience in small‑scale organic vegetable production. Employees participate in the full scope of farm operations, ensuring a varied and dynamic workday.
Key Responsibilities
All aspects of vegetable production, including transplanting, weeding, irrigation management, harvesting, and packaging produce.
Assisting with seeding, propagation, and plant care in the greenhouse.
Potential opportunities to assist with CSA distribution or farmers' market sales.
Compensation (Monthly Stipend) Wage: Monthly stipend, with the final wage being commensurate with experience and qualifications (starting minimum of $2,500 per month).
Benefits: Unlimited access to farm produce for consumption. Opportunities to gain exposure to other sustainable farms in the region through the local CRAFT network.
Compensation (Hourly) This position is hourly, $15–$20 per hour.
Requirements & Ideal Candidate Profile
Previous farm experience is not necessary; we are happy to train motivated individuals.
Must be comfortable performing physical labor.
Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, sun).
A strong work ethic, reliability, sense of humor, and an earnest interest in sustainable agriculture are highly valued.
Learning Opportunities Our region boasts a strong community of sustainable farms. Throughout the season, employees will have unique opportunities to participate in organized tours of nearby operations, gaining valuable exposure to different farming methods and business models.
