Summary
The Transporter reports to the Messenger Transport Manager and is responsible for providing direct basic patient care and transportation for a group of patients, from simple to complex, under the guidance of the Registered Nurse. The role involves assessing patient mobility, ensuring the correct mode of transport is ordered and utilized, and assisting patients to and from bed, stretcher or wheelchair. Transport personnel have total care and responsibility of the patient while in transit, requiring good critical‑thinking skills to respond to unforeseen patient care needs. The transporter also transports medical equipment, records, laboratory specimens, patient meal trays, and other materials, and uses computer programs to perform dispatch functions. Education
High school or equivalent (GED). Certification, Registration & Licensure
American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR AED certification within 3 months of hire date. Experience
Evidence of experience in working effectively and positively with patients, registered nurses, and as a member of the multi‑disciplinary team. Responsibilities
Assists nursing staff and transports patients to designated areas of the hospital. Transports medical equipment, medical records, laboratory specimens, patient meal trays and materials to appropriate destinations while respecting patient privacy and product stability. Acts as fill‑in dispatcher, utilizing critical thinking skills and priority management to dispatch resources efficiently. Acts as the primary liaison between team resources and customers, managing day‑to‑day operations. Demonstrates effective time‑management and adherence to safe patient handling policy. Displays equipment competence for beds, wheelchairs, stretchers, oxygen, IV poles, and pumps. Maintains a clean and safe environment with stocked supplies and functioning equipment. Provides basic patient care assistance to nursing staff. Performs job‑specific requirements and other duties as assigned. Physical & Work Requirements
The job requires the employee to regularly lift, carry or push/pull objects up to 10 pounds, frequently up to 25 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds. The employee is required to walk, bend, do fine motor tasks, repeat motions, and reach. The employee must have adequate depth perception, far vision, near vision, and peripheral vision. The employee may be exposed to airborne pathogens, bodily fluids, moving mechanical parts, bloodborne pathogens, chemotherapeutic agents, electrical hazards, radiation, slippery surfaces, toxic or caustic chemicals, vibration, and moderate noise levels.
