Location Department of Transportation, Shelby County – Materials and Tests Division, Region 4, Field Services Section

Position Overview TDOT Engineering Technicians support daily transportation operations, including surveying, materials sampling, testing, construction inspection, and documentation.

Responsibilities

Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on assigned equipment, calibrate lab and mobile testing equipment.

Judge sample suitability, conduct testing and calculations in aggregate, soils, asphalt, concrete, density, field measurements, and manufactured products.

Conduct instrument work with laboratory and field tests, surveys, and inspections.

Interpret contract documents, legal documents, and project design plans for inspection activities.

Monitor and inspect production facilities, processes, equipment, sites, bridges, and materials for contract compliance.

Maintain records and prepare daily reports, project progress reports, test reports, and inspection reports.

Conduct field reviews and investigations on construction issues; monitor highway assets for maintenance needs.

Operate computer hardware and software to generate and complete reports, and document collected data.

Operate light duty vehicles and equipment for snow and ice removal from highways and bridges.

Communicate with internal and external customers including local businesses, governments, contractors, and first responders.

Additional Duties for Levels II & III

Inspect traffic control during construction operations and events.

Ensure quality of pre‑cast and pre‑stressed construction components for acceptance.

Additional Duties for Level III

Assist in training employees and provide on‑the‑job guidance.

Provide feedback to pre‑construction units and Headquarters Divisions on design changes, schedule delays, and quality issues.

Lead crews of technical staff and assign tasks to ensure timely completion.

Qualifications

High school diploma or General Educational Development diploma.

Must possess a valid Class D driver’s license; Class A Commercial Driver’s License required for certain duties (subject to age and endorsement conditions).

Must pass a drug test prior to employment; commercial driver positions subject to additional testing.

Ability to work overtime, weekends, night shifts, and on-call schedules.

Capacity to work outdoors in extreme weather, on uneven terrain, lifting >25 lbs, driving long distances.

Requirements for Technician Levels

Technician 1: Entry level—no prior experience required beyond high school; eligible for promotion upon competency.

Technician 2: Intermediate level—must have completed Technician 1 skill elements; eligible for promotion to level 3.

Technician 3: Experienced level—must have completed Technician 2 skill elements; includes mentoring junior staff.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Basic reporting, contract interpretation, laboratory & field testing safety procedures.

Technical skill in street and highway traffic rules, temporary signage, and safety precautions.

Operating light and heavy highway equipment, tools, and computers.

Effective communication, teamwork, and problem‑solving abilities.
