OPEN UNTIL FILLED GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a dedicated Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our team in Lander, Wyoming. This is a full-time, entry-level position.

In this role, you will work under direct supervision to perform a variety of maintenance and repair functions on heavy-duty vehicles and equipment. Responsibilities include diesel and gasoline engine overhauls, tune-ups, brake and steering system repairs, transmission work, and hydraulic system maintenance. This position provides a strong foundation for developing your mechanical expertise while supporting Wyoming’s critical transportation operations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Conducts a wide variety of preventive maintenance and/or repairs on various diesel and automotive equipment, along with other self-propelled or towed equipment.

Performs safety inspections on all types of automotive and diesel equipment.

Reads and interprets technical manuals to diagnose and correct problems with vehicles and equipment.

Rigs and fabricates new equipment to district standards.

Creates repair orders.

Responsible for the inventory of the shop, equipment, and supplies.

Designs and fabricates parts for tractors, mowers, and machinery for specialized applications.

PREFERENCES/AGENCY REQUIREMENTS Preference will be given to applicants who have completed any equipment certification exams.

Welder Certification card for FH & V Fillet and FH & V Grove 3/4" welds is a plus.

Agency requires the successful applicant to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License.

Must pass a series of seven fundamental tests, including Electricity, Engines, Hydraulics, Power Trains, Administrative Procedures, Rigging, and General Shop.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of methods and techniques of automotive maintenance and repair.

Knowledge of electronic principles and diagnostic tools.

Knowledge of light and heavy-duty automotive equipment and its parts (i.e., hydraulics, hydrostatics, drive trains, gas, and diesel engine overhauls).

Knowledge of grease and oil specifications.

Knowledge of general servicing of equipment.

Knowledge of policies and safe work procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education & Experience Substitution:

2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics)

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Ability to obtain and maintain a CDL

or

Education:

Associate's Degree

Experience:

0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics)

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Ability to obtain a CDL

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Individuals in this classification must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Individuals must report to the Department Shop within 30 minutes of receiving the call. Acceptance of an appointment to this classification signifies that the individual is aware of this requirement and will comply with it. Failure to be available for emergency work, without an acceptable excuse, will be grounds for immediate disciplinary action and possible dismissal.

Individuals in this classification will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Constant use of manual and powered hand tools.

Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment.

Occasional exposure to hazardous materials.

Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently.

Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods of time.

Work in adverse environmental conditions

Working around high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.

NOTES

FLSA: Non-exempt

WYDOT will conduct motor vehicle record checks to verify a valid driver's license.

This position includes a $50/month tool allowance. Must provide your own tools.

Occasional overnight travel may be required.

Qualifying eligibility and criteria for the hiring bonus

Temporary employees accepting a full-time position.

Current employees accepting a promotional opportunity - recruitment must have been opened to the public.

One year of service to WYDOT must be completed; failure to complete this requirement will forfeit the hiring incentive, funds will be recouped from final pay.

Internal candidates would be required to remain in the position for a minimum of one (1) year from their promotion date.

Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12-month period.

If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period, they would be required to pay the bonus back.
