Job Description The City of Eagan is looking for a skilled Mechanic to keep our fleet running at peak performance. In this position, you’ll tackle everything from routine maintenance to emergency repairs on a variety of city-owned vehicles and equipment. Work alongside a collaborative team to help our City operate smoothly and safely, while contributing to the well-being of our residents.

Essential Position Functions

Performs scheduled routine maintenance and repairs of heavy and light equipment including multi-axle trucks, loaders, graders, backhoes, sweepers, snow removal equipment, Police and Fire emergency vehicles, and other City-owned equipment to ensure safety and reliability.

Keeps accurate records of all maintenance, repairs, and parts used for each piece of equipment and keeps the Chief Mechanic/Shop Supervisor informed of inventory levels and parts needs.

Inspects, troubleshoots, and performs diagnostic analysis of all vehicles and equipment consistent with the preventative maintenance program.

Conducts Commercial Vehicle Inspections consistent with all commercial vehicle requirements.

Assists with the coordination of vehicle repair downtime to ensure operations are not compromised.

Sets up emergency response vehicles and equipment with required operational accessories including light bars, electronics, restraint devices, push bars, hose reels, tools and hitches making modification as may be required to ensure safety and efficient function.

Performs necessary welding and mechanical work to maintain and repair equipment, designs modifications or retrofits to accommodate unique uses and/or demands.

Keeps work area and shop clean, functional, in safe working condition, and secures all tool and parts storage areas during non-working hours, performs minor building and grounds maintenance tasks as may be required.

Adheres to and implements all safety rules, regulations and practices including wearing appropriate safety equipment as necessary to protect the employee, the operation, and the general public.

Read and understand written and electronic manuals, reports and directives, search databases.

Assists with the City winter snow and ice control operations as required or necessary, assignments may include plowing City streets, parking lots, cul‑de‑sacs, trails, walks or other areas.

Responds to emergency callouts during non-work hours made necessary by breakdowns, weather conditions, storms or other unexpected circumstances.

Performs other maintenance tasks and assists other City departments/divisions, as may be obvious, apparent or assigned, to accommodate the efficient operation of the City.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Two (2) years of vocational, technical or comparable secondary training in auto, truck or heavy equipment repair and maintenance.

Two (2) years of verifiable shop or field experience with the repair and maintenance of autos, trucks, and/or heavy equipment.

Shop or workplace experience with diagnostic tools and scanners.

Experience with metal working, fabrication and/or welding.

Possession of a Commercial Vehicle Inspectors Certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.

Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.

Ability to perform the essential position functions and meet the physical requirements of the position as described.

Things that may help you be successful in this role

Certification by A.S.E. (Automotive Service Excellence).

Four (4) years of verifiable shop or field experience with the repair and maintenance of autos, trucks and/or heavy equipment.

Work experience in a governmental maintenance shop, dealership, or other high-volume operation.

Two (2) or more years of work experience on vehicle computer‑controlled systems or verifiable technical or vocational training in vehicle computer‑controlled systems.

Experience with the operation, maintenance and repair of Police emergency equipment, Fire/rescue apparatus, and construction/turf care equipment.

Law Enforcement Vehicle Technician Certification (EVT) and/or Fire Apparatus Technician Certification from the Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification Commission.

Snow plowing and ice control experience.

Working Conditions And Hours Standard work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday – Friday. Shift changes and alternative schedules as determined by the Supervisor or Superintendent may be required to meet specific needs. Call outs for emergencies or snow and ice control may occur at any time. Physical activities include 90% of the time working at an indoor shop (temperatures fluctuate) and 10% outdoors for onsite equipment repairs (extreme heat, cold, snow, rain, uneven/slippery terrain, etc.).
