Responsibilities Perform prescribed, routine maintenance procedures on supermarket refrigeration systems and self‑contained temperature‑controlled merchandisers under the direction of a Master or Lead Service Technician. Assist with preventive maintenance, compressor change assists, leak searching and coil washing. Acquire knowledge through on‑the‑job training, including new product development, service bulletins, computer‑based training and issue resolution. Complete necessary documents (work tickets and timesheets) and electronic communication accurately and timely. Utilize a hand‑held computer to complete customer paperwork and invoicing requirements. Maintain truck inventory in an accurate, neat, and orderly manner; adhere to vehicle maintenance program guidelines (if applicable). Identify and use standard tools of the trade, including refrigerant recovery equipment. Develop and maintain excellent customer relations and professionally articulate equipment and system malfunctions using correct terminology. Perform service on conventional refrigeration systems, parallel rack systems, walk‑in coolers, and other commonly used refrigeration units for supermarkets and convenience stores. Demonstrate basic understanding of refrigerant and oil properties, sub‑cooling, superheat, psychometrics, copper‑to‑copper brazing, single‑phase compressor components, and refrigerated fixture airflow. Read and understand temperature and pressure charts. Conduct basic electrical troubleshooting and refrigeration cycle diagnostics. Safely handle R290 refrigerant and other hazardous materials such as dry nitrogen. De‑ice case and walk‑in evaporator coils, replace fan motors, and wash condenser coils. Understand basic system evacuation and charging, system pump‑down, and system defrost. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications Formal Education Requirement High School Diploma/GED – Required HVAC‑R Technical School Degree – Preferred
Minimum Years of Experience External candidates: 2 years in the field or 0 years with certification from a Technical School Internal candidates: 1 year as a General Laborer with completion of OJT & Skills Assessment
Additional Information Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record as per fleet policy. Physically able to walk distances, bench and crouch, climb ladders, work at high elevations, and lift/carry objects up to fifty pounds repetitively. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; detail‑oriented and highly motivated. Strong mechanical aptitude for basic maintenance tasks and use of hand tools. Familiarity with HVAC heating and cooling concepts and basic electrical schematics. Availability to work nights and/or weekends as required. Knowledge of basic refrigeration and/or commercial refrigeration and HVAC – preferred. Strong leadership and business acumen. EPA 608 universal certification. Superior decision‑making ability and paperwork skills.
