DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW: Facilities Management is a department within University Services which is composed of the departments and people who deliver the non-academic operations across the University of Minnesota system. Facilities Management (FM) is responsible for all buildings, grounds and the energy management needs of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. Facilities Management works to provide a safe, reliable and welcoming campus in support of the University's mission of teaching, research and outreach. FM's responsibilities include over 25 million square feet in more than 280 buildings across 1200 acres in the Twin Cities.

JOB POSITION OVERVIEW: The Custodial Equipment Mechanic provides repair, preventative maintenance and training assistance for motorized custodial equipment. Examples include autoscrubbers, vacuums, sweepers, carpet extractors, floor machines, burnishers, pressure washers, etc. These range in size from large battery powered riding units to corded hand held units. Larger equipment is generally repaired onsite in the building it gets used in, and smaller equipment is brought to the equipment repair room for service. The Mechanic will have a micro-van for mobility around campus and to transport smaller equipment. Larger trucks may be borrowed from districts to transport larger items or UMarket will transport these for us.

Position Responsibilities

Perform repair service to non-functional, or partially functional, custodial equipment (80%)

Perform preventative maintenance service to custodial equipment (15%)

Assist in training of onsite staff for care of custodial equipment (5%)

Other duties as assigned (As Needed)

Position Qualifications Required (minimum) qualifications:

Mechanical minded ability to figure out how things work to troubleshoot repairs needed.

Ability to read and write English for directions, troubleshooting, research, and communication.

Ability to use computer software for recording and logging activities (TRIRIGA, Google).

Ability to walk/stand for the majority of the day with bending, squatting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, wrenching, etc. to access, remove, replace or repair components on equipment.

Technical education/training in mechanical maintenance totaling 1 year + 1 year of applicable work experience, or a combination totaling 2 years or more.

Has a valid driver's license and meets the requirements for driving University Vehicles.

Preferred qualifications:

Personal relations skills for dealing with Supervisors and Custodial Staff.

Patience to persist in troubleshooting to seek resolutions to equipment failures.

Detail oriented to ensure repairs are complete and each machine is completely functional.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift and carry 70 pounds (primarily for replacement of batteries).

Pay and Benefits Pay Range: $22.98-26.87, depending on education/qualifications/experience
