Legal Secretary – California Department of Social Services
This is a permanent full‑time position located in Sacramento County (Riverside or Sacramento). The role can be performed with a hybrid work arrangement.
Pay California Department of Social Services provided pay range: $4,371.00 – $5,473.00 (Class A) and $4,591.00 – $5,748.00 (Class B).
Responsibilities
Support 2‑4 attorneys, including senior level staff, by performing complex secretarial work involving legal correspondence, petitions, briefs, legal opinions, pleadings, motions, testimonials, and depositions.
Proofread, edit and format legal documents, and prepare form letters, files, and e‑files.
Serve legal pleadings in multiple jurisdictions – State, Federal and Appellate courts.
Maintain calendars for assigned attorneys; schedule meetings and appointments, including high‑level executives, and resolve scheduling conflicts.
Make travel arrangements, prepare travel expense claims and assist with special projects for attorneys on complex cases.
Analyze and apply rules, regulations, statutes and laws regarding legal procedures and document processing.
Work independently and as part of a team with other Legal Secretaries and Senior Legal Typists under the supervision of a Legal Support Supervisor I.
Qualifications
Current typing certificate issued within the past four years, verifying a minimum speed of 45 words per minute.
Cleared Background Investigation prior to hire.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including mastery of English grammar, punctuation and spelling.
Ability to recognize and interpret legal terminology, statutes, rules and regulations pertinent to the role.
Proficiency in electronic filing and travel logistics coordination.
Excellent attendance, reliability and ability to work well under pressure while managing multiple priorities.
Special Requirements
Background Investigation must be cleared before employment.
Typing Certificate required; a copy must be provided prior to hire.
