Founded in 1975, American YouthWorks (AYW) connects young adults to education, paid career training, and support services through Conservation Corps programs in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma, and YouthBuild Pre‑Apprenticeship programs in Austin and Taylor, TX. POSITION DESCRIPTION Searching for an opportunity to gain conservation experience and explore the outdoors with a focus in gulf and coastal restoration?
The American YouthWorks – Louisiana Conservation Corps (AYW LaCC) is looking to fill GulfCorps Crew Leader and Member openings for the 2025-2026 term year!
AYW Conservation Corps is a part of the GulfCorps Initiative – For the upcoming season we are looking for dedicated young adults to work with us! LaCC provides members with hands‑on opportunities, extensive training in conservation and coastal restoration, and the freedom to develop personally and professionally.
The LaCC GulfCorps program is based out of Baton Rouge, LA and aims to empower young people through conservation, education, service, and job training. Participants engage in hands‑on projects on public lands, coastal regions, and occasionally in disaster areas.
In this program the primary focus is gulf and coastal restoration with the potential to conduct prescribed burns. Crews will receive training and education on how prescribed burns impact the environment with Wildland Fire Trainings. There are also structured professional development for future career expansion and exploration after the gulf corps program!

COMPENSATION (Monthly Living Allowance):
Crew Leaders: $2,720 per month ($1,360 biweekly)
Crew Members: $2,400 per month ($1,200 biweekly)
AMERICORPS TERM LENGTHS
(Baton Rouge, LA (900 hours))
CPR & Wilderness Advanced First Aid Certification
Technical & fundamental skills training
GulfCorps training
S212 training (depending on projects)
Wildland Firefighter training (depending on projects)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Frequently required to walk and hike over long distances while carrying tools
Ability to operate tools
Heavy lifting, bending, and carrying up to 35-50 pounds (depending on crew type)
Walking and working on steep or uneven terrain
Ability to work long days in adverse weather conditions
Depending on crew type, ability to hitch, camp, and travel throughout the duration of an entire AmeriCorps term
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED
Between the ages of 18-35; Ages 21+ for Crew Leaders
US Citizenship or lawful permanent US Resident
Ability to pass a National Service Criminal History Check (NSCHC)
Additional experience and qualifications for Crew Leaders
Clean 3-year Driving Record
3-5 months of previous conservation experience (e.g., chainsaws, habitat restoration, invasive species removal, trail work)
Able to work independently and with a crew while having a safety mindset
Strong commitment to completing an entire term of service with a desire to serve the community and the environment
Adaptability and flexibility with project tasks during service hours
Desire to learn, grow and challenge yourself
Additional Preferred Experience and Qualifications for Crew Leaders
Willingness to engage in hard conversations and mediate conflict
Desire to explore your leaderships style and develop leadership skills
Good problem solving and logistical skills
Collaborative Leadership and Facilitation skills
Prior Conservation Corps and/or AmeriCorps experience with successful completion of term
