The Part-time employee in this class performs a variety of work on automotive, construction and specialized equipment. The employee serves as a semi-skilled mechanic in the garage. The employee performs automotive and mechanical work repairing gasoline, diesel and hybrid vehicles, and performing preventive maintenance. The work requires operation of various test equipment and hand tools in order to support the work activities. The employee is subject to hazards associated with mechanical repairs including working in both inside and outside environments, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and oils. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Shop Foreman & Fleet Manager. The employee receives assignments and instructions from the supervisor and is evaluated by observation and the quality and quantity of the work performed.

Essential Functions Essential Duties and Tasks

Adjusts, repairs and services a variety of cars, light and heavy construction equipment, trucks, hybrid vehicles and related equipment.

Operates equipment such as lift jacks, tire changers, air guns, battery chargers, wrenches, cranes, air compressors, and other hand tools.

Relines, replaces and checks brakes; realigns wheels and makes corrections using wheel alignment devices; turns brake rotors and drums.

Changes and balances tires.

Lubricates, repairs, and replaces parts and filters; cleans and replaces spark plugs, installs radiator hoses, and replaces belts.

Upfits various types of specialized equipment such as GPS, police equipment, lighting, etc.

Writes work orders with time and billed parts for electric vehicle data.

Maintains computer records and data; prepares reports as needed; makes sure vehicles are inspected and maintained.

Diagnosis and repairs computer systems on vehicles and equipment.

Orders parts and supplies and picks up from the vendor.

Cleans and arranges tools and garage area.

Performs related duties as required.

Valid NC Drivers License.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of the methods, tools, parts, and equipment used in the repair of light automotive cars, trucks, heavy construction, and public safety equipment.

Knowledge of electronics as it relates to diagnosing vehicle repairs.

Knowledge of wiring issues related to police vehicles.

Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine operation and repair.

Knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, vacuum, and brake systems.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and related safety precautions of the class.

Skill in using and operating tools and machinery used in automotive repair work.

Knowledge in diagnosing mechanical problems and detecting worn or broken parts by inspection.

Ability to read and understand service manuals and schematic drawings.

Ability to operate vehicles safely.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and supervisors.

Ability to establish and maintain records of work activities and parts.

Desirable Education and Experience Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by coursework and experience in repairing automotive, construction, and specialized equipment.

Physical Requirements Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 20 pound of force constantly to move objects.

Must possess the visual acuity to operate machines and equipment including close inspection of moving and small parts, using measurement devices, assembly, and fabrication of parts, and to maintain records.

Once an offer of employment has been extended, candidates will undergo a thorough background investigation, including NC State Bureau of Investigation fingerprinting.
