Post Masters Student on Thermophysical and Thermomechanical Properties Join Los Alamos National Laboratory as a Post‑Masters Research Assistant in the Foundry and Solidification Sciences Team. You will support thermophysical and thermomechanical property measurements of metals and alloys for research and development projects.

What You Will Do

Assist in measurements such as specific heat, enthalpy, density, thermal expansion coefficient, flow stress and strain, and transformation temperatures.

Operate equipment for vacuum induction melting and vacuum arc melting.

Manage portions of projects, working independently and reporting to a mentor.

Analyze data and communicate results.

What You Need

Completion of a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or a related field within the last three years with a GPA of at least 3.2.

Understanding of metal manufacturing processes.

Experience with differential scanning calorimetry.

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

U.S. citizenship or eligibility to obtain a Q clearance.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience with dilatometry and high‑temperature mechanical testing, especially using a Gleeble.

Experience with optical and electron microscopy (LOM, SEM, EDS, EBSD).

Ability to design experiments and identify creative solutions.

Ability to work independently in a hands‑on laboratory environment.

Education:

Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or a related field. Essential Job Functions Lifting 30+ pounds, standing, walking; work near ionizing radiation and moving machinery; noisy environment.

Work Location Los Alamos, NM; onsite.
