Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent, plus two years of specialized technical courses in automotive and truck mechanics.

3-5 years of journeyman level repair experience of vehicles including buses.

Valid Colorado driver’s license.

Commercial driver’s license (CDL) with P and S endorsements.

Criminal background check required for hire.

Obtain CDE inspector’s license within six months of hire.

Job Goals Responsible for performing repairs and daily preventative maintenance on school buses, trucks, automotive and other heavy‑duty machines; manage all daily shop activities including repairs, administration, organization, planning, coordinating, scheduling, monitoring, quality control, warranty repair and evaluation of maintenance and repair services. May be required to cover school bus route on occasion. Must have own tools.

Essential Job Functions

Follow prescribed preventative maintenance procedures on all vehicles.

Perform services and repairs on school buses, including diesel engines, injectors, pumps, automatic transmission repair and replacement, wheelchair lifts, air brake systems and electrical systems.

Assist in the maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of all district vehicles as required by Colorado Department of Education and District safety policies and procedures.

Perform Colorado Department of Education (CDE) inspections on all district buses and white fleet by following CDE procedures and District and department policies.

Knowledge of diesel emission, diesel particulate filters (DPF), and SCR systems.

Respond to school bus driver needs and maintain a positive working relationship with Transportation Department employees.

Promote high standards of safety and housekeeping methods in work‑connected areas.

Communicate with equipment operators, drive, and operate vehicle, or use diagnostic equipment to identify problems and malfunctions.

Operate service truck to respond to service calls in case of bus or vehicle breakdown; perform operator pre‑trip vehicle inspections as prescribed by State of Colorado and commercial driver’s license authority.

Troubleshoot and program computer‑controlled engine systems including Cummins, International, GM, Ford, and Dodge by using diagnostic equipment.

Initiate orders for parts and equipment using parts books or other sources.

Document vehicle repair records including the nature of the repair, labor hours, and parts used.

Drive equipment in and out of repair shop; operate and road test repaired vehicles to ensure proper function.

Perform diagnostic and mechanical repair work without direct supervision in the shop or in the field.

Respond to calls after regularly scheduled work hours as needed.

Participate in continuing educational training for new techniques and job skills as requested.

Perform small area body and fender work, including spray‑painting exterior and interior finishes.

Drive school bus as needed.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of automotive trade practices, tools, and equipment.

Knowledge of construction and operation of automotive electrical systems and internal combustion engines.

Knowledge of safety hazards and necessary precautions required to work around, in and under vehicles or to work with petroleum‑based chemicals, solvents and exhaust fumes.

Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job.

Salary Vehicle Mechanics are on the Classified Salary Schedule. Fountain‑Fort Carson School District allows new hires to bring in up to eight years of previous experience in similar school‑type settings. New hires tend to start at the lower end of the salary range.
