Mechanic – Arkansas Department of Transportation Posting closes on 1/13/2026. Under moderate supervision of the Shop Supervisor, this position is responsible for performing routine maintenance, repair, and safety inspection of Department vehicles.

Essential Job Functions

Perform and assist with mostly minor and occasionally larger mechanical repair ranging from tune‑ups to major overhauls for all types of vehicles, specialized equipment, and heavy equipment in the shop and field.

Perform annual preventive maintenance inspections, service, and repair of Department vehicles, specialized equipment, and heavy equipment.

Test vehicles after repair for satisfactory performance.

Secondary Job Functions

Support District crews and maintain equipment during ice and snow removal operations.

Minimum Requirements

Education & experience: Ability to read and speak English sufficiently to converse with the public, understand highway traffic signs and signals, and respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.

Knowledge, skills and abilities: Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in basic automotive mechanical principles and repair.

Physical requirements: Ability to use hand and power tools; lift and carry 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.

Work conditions: Shop environment; ability to perform duties in all weather types and other conditions such as noise, dust, and fumes.

Licenses & certifications: Valid driver’s license; must obtain a valid Class A commercial driver’s license with tanker (“N”) endorsement within 180 days of hire or promotion. Must meet physical and mental CDL requirements. Failure to obtain CDL within the period results in termination.

Pre‑employment drug/alcohol testing required as per ARDOT policy; internal safety‑sensitive applicants may be exempt.

This position does not require theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge or a bachelor’s degree; it is not eligible for H‑1B visa sponsorship.
