Position Summary Under general supervision, perform journey-level work in the installation, maintenance, inspection, modification, remodel, and repair of mechanical plumbing equipment and fixtures for water, steam, sewage, and perform all other related work as required. This position is required to maintain, troubleshoot, repair and/or replace and test plumbing systems; assemble, install and repair pumps, pipes, fittings, and fixtures; cut, thread and weld pipes; assemble and install valves, pipe fittings and pipes; inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations; inspect related work performed by contractors; estimate cost, time and materials for plumbing projects; participate in the maintenance and operations of a plumbing shop; clean, maintain and service tools and equipment used in the performance of duties. This position is designated as essential personnel.

This position is required to maintain, troubleshoot, repair and/or replace and test plumbing systems.

Key Responsibility

Perform tasks with the proper use of personal protection equipment; diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools to provide viable repairs and or solutions.

Make recommendations and advise management of potential safety hazards.

Inspect systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with national, state, and local codes and requirements.

Test systems, equipment, and fixtures, using test devices to ensure compatibility and safety of the system.

Key Responsibility

Develops and maintains strong relationships with students, staff, faculty, contractors, and other campus partners by listening and understanding, and responding to identified needs.

Interacts with customers clearly and concisely to convey information.

Responds to various work orders involving plumbing systems in the residence halls, as well as other systems, including but not limited to electrical, HVAC , mechanical, carpentry, etc.

Staff will be courteous at all times.

Minimum Qualifications HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR EQUIVALENCY ; OR DEMONSTRATED POSSESSION OF THE COMPETENCIES NECESSARY TO PERFORM THE WORK . SOME POSITIONS MAY REQUIRE SPECIAL LICENSES OR CERTIFICATION . OPTIONAL GUIDELINES : EXPERIENCE IN THE TRADE AREA RELATED TO THE AREA OF ASSIGNMENT MAY BE SUBSTITUTED ON A YEAR - FOR - YEAR BASIS .

Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates Must have a valid NC Driver’s License.

Plumbing and backflow license preferred but not required.

Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit Facilities Operations has the responsibility of providing a wide range of services to all administrative departments, student programs, and all academic schools and departments. Services include all aspects of corrective and preventive maintenance, operations, grounds maintenance, housekeeping, utility infrastructure maintenance and operations, business operations, safety, regulatory compliance, project management, and renovations. These duties are conducted for a campus consisting of over 100 buildings totaling 6 million gross square feet on over 275 acres.
