Lead Engineering Technician

Office Location: Any Apex Office (Fargo, Bismarck, or Dickinson, ND; Detroit Lakes, St. Cloud, or Minnetonka, MN).
Primary responsibilities include working as a key project team member on highway and urban roadway projects from design through construction. A Lead Engineering Technician will independently and collaboratively contribute to design and development of project plans using CADD skills and serve as Chief Inspector on construction projects. Additional responsibilities may include materials testing and inspection, support to survey crews, and training junior staff.
Qualification Requirements
High School diploma or equivalent is required.
Two-year Associate’s Degree in Engineering Technology or Technical Degree in Drafting is highly desirable (applicable experience may be accepted).
5-10 years of experience in civil engineering design and construction inspection principles is preferred.
Proficiency with CADD platforms such as Bentley OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation Connect, Autodesk AutoCAD, or Civil 3D.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows/Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Material testing experience with MnDOT technical certifications desired, or ability to attain them promptly.
Knowledge of MnDOT’s AASHTOWARE system for daily work reports.
Willingness to interact with people and work in team environments.
Detail oriented, self‑motivated with strong communication and organizational skills.
Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
Physical Requirements
Operate computer under normal ergonomic office conditions.
Work in a variety of weather conditions and terrains on construction sites.
May require prolonged standing and walking.
Must work scheduled hours.
Required to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
Typical Tasks and Duties
Prepare detailed dimensional drawings and design layouts from surveys and sketches using CADD software.
Calculate dimensions, square footage, profiles, and material quantities with computer programs.
Follow company and client CADD standards and procedures.
Execute multiple tasks assigned by Project Managers and Engineers.
Assist with construction observation, surveying, and materials testing.
Act as resident project representative or owner’s representative during construction.
Communicate with contractors and stakeholders about construction progress.
Document construction progress and quantities in field diaries and automated computer record systems.
Attend meetings via teleconference or remote video conference; video conferencing essential if working remotely.
Follow company employee handbook and safety policies.
Perform responsibilities in a conscientious, legal, and ethical manner.
Work independently and in a team environment.
Participate in training to develop communication, technical, and organizational skills.
Travel and overnight stays may be required; overtime may be needed during construction season.
