How You Will Make an Impact (Job Summary) SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact.

As a Machine Operator, you will set up and operate conventional, special‑purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic parts.

What You Can Expect in this Role (Job Responsibilities) While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:

Design and/or develop tools, jigs, and fixtures used in production.

Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.

Measure, mark, and scribble dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.

Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.

Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, depth and angle of cut, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.

Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out‑of‑tolerance machining, and adjust machine controls or control media as required.

Verify conformance of finished workpiece to specifications.

Set up and operate machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.

Fit and assemble parts into complete assembly.

Verify dimensions and alignment of assembly.

Install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and test operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance.

Operate welding equipment to cut or weld parts.

Develop specifications from general description and draw sketch of part or product to be fabricated.

Confere with engineers, production personnel, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.

What We Are Looking For (Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education) Required Experience

One to three months of related experience and/or training.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

A fully qualified machinist will have completed, including passing a written test, and satisfactory completion of at least eight terms of machinist courses at an accredited technical school.

High school diploma or GED.

Frequently required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.

Occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

Regular lifting or moving up to 10 lbs and occasionally up to 25 lbs.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; risk of electrical shock and vibration.

Noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
