Position Overview Water & Waste Operator Mechanic

– responsible for independently operating, maintaining, modifying, troubleshooting, and repairing mechanical equipment in wastewater treatment plants and water distribution systems. The role focuses on pump operation, instrumentation calibration, and ensuring effluent quality meets federal, state, and local standards.

Responsibilities

Operate and monitor pumps, motors, engines, and other mechanical equipment to control wastewater flow.

Calibrate plant instrumentation and control systems using electronic, mechanical, chemical, and electrical test equipment.

Assist in the maintenance, repair, and adjustment of plumbing systems, including water, drain lines, and sprinkler systems.

Sample, analyze, and treat water and sewage to meet quality standards.

Maintain logs, charts, and records of equipment operation and water samples.

Inspect and repair special tools, jigs, fittings, and instruments assigned to the classification.

Operate gas welding equipment for cutting, burning, and soldering as necessary.

Add chemicals, such as ammonia or chlorine, to disinfect water or other liquids.

Clean and maintain equipment, tanks, filter beds, and other work areas.

Perform minor insulation work with prefabricated mineral insulating materials, bindings, plastic, cement, etc., as required.

Maintain certifications, licenses, permits, and other required credentials for performance of tasks.

Attend meetings and task force groups to communicate issues, obtain approvals, and resolve problems.

Perform any work assigned to the classification and incidental work in other classifications when necessary.

Work safely in compliance with federal, state, local, and national regulations and corporate policies.

Required Education, Certifications, Experience

High school diploma or equivalent plus recognition of 2 years apprenticeship training or 2 years military or civilian vocational training, OR 5 years direct work‑related skills, knowledge, and experience in water and wastewater treatment.

Florida Class “C” (or higher) Water Treatment operator license in accordance with FAC 62‑602.

Pass applicable medical certification and obtain and maintain job‑related licenses, certifications, and permits required by federal, state, local, NASA, and Air Force standards.

Preferred Education, Certifications, Experience

Water Distribution/Water Treatment Collection Certifications and Water Treatment certifications preferred.

Valid Class B CDL within one year of employment.

Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Interact with customers and coworkers in a courteous, professional, and effective manner.

Strong customer service and partnership with the business units.

Work independently and as part of a team.

Working knowledge of computers and related programs.

Ability to read and understand electrical drawings and work safely on energized and de‑energized equipment.

Ability to explain technical information to technical and non‑technical people.

Effective writing skills and understanding of programs and software applications.

General knowledge of office routines, scheduling, and standard computer software.

Pass applicable medical certification.

Other Requirements

U.S. citizen with required clearances/badges as program and position requirements.

Effective communication in English, both verbal and written.

Valid driver’s license.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry heavy objects exceeding 30 pounds; frequent walking, standing, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and bending for extended periods; working at heights; frequent stair climbing and ladder, scaffold work. Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety shoes, hearing and eye protection, hard hats, respirators, gloves, and fall protection must be worn as required. The position demands tolerance of extreme indoor and outdoor conditions, high noise levels, exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and electrical shock hazards. A flexible work schedule and alternating workdays may be required.
