Job Description
Select appropriate materials and sterilization packaging for each instrument set, ensuring proper wrapping for aseptic technique.
Ensure sterility indicators and lot stickers are present on all instrument sets and packages.
Operate complex sterilization equipment, selecting correct method based on manufacturer instructions.
Review and sign all sterilizer recording charts to verify proper sterilization parameters before releasing items for clinical use.
Monitor sterilizer printouts, maintain records, and document all requirements in appropriate log books or computer systems.
Identify and segregate reusable items for decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization, selecting appropriate cleaning methods based on manufacturer instructions.
Disassemble and inspect items for damage or missing components, ensuring safe operation of all equipment in the decontamination area.
Accurately assemble instruments, complex instrument sets, and other surgical items, recording information in the computer tracking system or paper instrument count sheet.
Utilize the recall process for sterilization failures and notify supervisors or managers of positive results.
Communicate effectively with all hospital departments and within the department, using the chain of command to resolve issues.
Participate in training new employees, attending in‑services and department meetings to maintain knowledge base.
Rotate assignments among various areas within the department, including decontamination, surgical tray assembly, sterilization processes, and equipment management.
Qualifications
High School Graduate or equivalent (Required)
Technical/Vocational School education
Basic Life Support – CPR Certified (BLS)
RQI Resuscitation Quality Improvement
Certified Registered Central Service Tech (CRCST) – EV Accredited Issuing Body
Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) – EV Accredited Issuing Body
