MUSCP - PRN Sterile Processing Tech - Summerville Job Description Summary: MUSC is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician to join our team in providing critical care to procedural areas across our healthcare enterprise. Sterile Processing Technicians ensure procedural equipment consistently meets the highest quality and safety standards, and is ready for use by all areas across the healthcare enterprise. This position receives and processes incoming supplies and equipment, including performing cleaning and sterilizing duties, and is an integral part of the daily operation of all units.

Responsibilities:

Maintain adequate inventory for assembly of instruments and equipment.

Perform and participate in the decontamination and cleaning of all instrumentation received from all units according to established standards and procedures.

Prepare case carts and trays for decontamination and load them into washer and/or sterilizer as prescribed procedure.

Operate index washers, cart washers, ultrasonic cleaners and manually clean instruments and equipment as prescribed by established standards and procedures.

Inspect all instruments for cleanliness, proper function, and breakage by viewing the instruments before assembly.

Use appropriate container, wrap or pouch according to the size of the instrument or equipment.

Sterilize instruments and surgical trays by following prescribed policies and procedures.

Run tests on all sterilizers, monitor and document that all parameters have been met.

Use chemicals appropriately, taking into consideration intended use and chemical function; knowledge of appropriate PPE is also necessary.

Assist the OR team in obtaining instruments/equipment necessary for procedures in a timely manner, expediting the OR schedule.

Assemble and distribute case carts accurately and in a timely manner.

Travel between sites as needed based on departmental needs.

Required Minimum Training and Education:

High School Diploma or GED, and certification through CRCST – HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) or CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution).

Physical Requirements:

Continuous ability to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Must bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, and work in a latex‑safe environment. Must be able to lift, lower, push, pull or carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36” to overhead 25 lbs, and work in dusty or confined spaces as required.
