Position Summary

Utilizes mechanical cleaning equipment to clean sewer lines to relieve stoppages, prepare sewer lines for televising, clean sewer manholes, clean sewer pump station wet wells and clean sewer collection system vortexes. Essential Functions

Operate motor vehicles. Use cleaning nozzles and equipment for mainline cleaning, removal of debris, and relief of blockages. Vacuum debris from manholes, excavations, wet wells, and other sites. Use high‑pressure sprayers to clean manholes, wet wells, etc. Perform routine preventive and corrective maintenance on vehicles and equipment, requiring basic knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, mechanical systems, and hydraulics. Use GIS and grid maps to locate and document work required. Complete work tickets showing jobs done, hours worked, and follow‑up needed. Set up traffic control in accordance with Highway Department requirements. Be available for emergency duty if required. Attend work reliably and meet attendance requirements. Conform to all Charleston Water System policies and procedures, including the Environmental Management System. Additional Duties

Cross‑train on operation of backhoes, trail‑hoes, bobcats, and similar heavy equipment. Work as part of the closed‑circuit televising (CCTV) crew. Perform duties of a Collection System Operator II when required. Supervise crews on a daily basis if needed. Be subject to 24‑hour on‑call duty. Perform other duties as assigned. Physical Requirements

Operate and maintain motor vehicles. Move, traverse, and climb frequently on uneven ground, cluttered work areas, and unpaved streets. Make visual observations in daylight and night. Ascend and descend ladders and enter manholes up to 20 feet deep. Work in internal and external environmental conditions. Use PPE as defined in the Job Safety Analysis. Lift up to 50 lbs and move or transport equipment or materials up to 50 lbs; objects > 50 lbs require two‑person operation. Work in noisy environments; hearing protection required. Operate a desktop computer and field laptops. Job Requirements

Depending on qualifications, the candidate may be hired at one of the following grade levels: Grade 106

– $49,192.00 (23.65/hr) – $73,798.48 (35.48/hr) – $52,873.60 (25.42/hr) – $79,331.20 (38.14/hr) Grade 107

– $49,192.00 (23.65/hr) – $79,331.20 (38.14/hr) Hiring bonus: $3,000 (if a valid CDL Class A is held at time of hire). Education and Experience

Two (2) years of experience in wastewater collection, utility work, pipefitting, plumbing, construction, manufacturing, and/or general maintenance. High school diploma or GED required. General knowledge of mechanical and hydraulic systems; ability to diagnose and repair worn or defective parts. Prior work record indicating dependability and conscientiousness. Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

Obtain a “D” wastewater collection systems operator’s license within two years of hire. Valid South Carolina Driver’s License required. Obtain a “C” wastewater collection systems operator’s license within two years of hire. Valid South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License Class A required; tanker endorsements must be obtained within the first six months of employment. Training Needs

OSHA and department safety training as required. Skills‑based training. Standard Operating Instruction (SOI) per department requirements. ISO 14001 standards for department and company. Potential Career Path

Collection System Supervisor Senior Collection System Manager Salary and Benefits

Salary Range: $49,192.00 to $79,331.20.

Base pay, hourly or salaried, commensurate with experience.
