Student Technical Specialist

Earth and Planetary Sciences are currently inviting applications from self-motivated and creative students to join our team as an office assistant. Office Assistants are an extremely valuable part of the team and support the department in a variety of ways to meet business needs. Students hired into this position must be reliable and interact well with people as they may serve as a primary line of communication for faculty, staff, students, vendors and guests, and therefore should possess the ability to communicate effectively over the phone, via email, and in person. Office Assistants may work closely with Department Leads to perform a wide variety of administrative tasks and support, as well as planning activities and tasks. Duties and responsibilities may include:

  • Answer telephones, route calls, take messages, and provide general information; greet and direct visitors; answer routine inquiries; maintain logs as required.
  • Distribute correspondence and other material to department staff/faculty.
  • Copy and/or duplicate materials as requested; may oversee day-to-day operation of copy machine.
  • Establish, maintain, process, and/or update files, records and/or other documents.
  • Perform specialized services of a routine clerical/administrative nature in strict accordance with established procedural guidelines, as appropriate to the position.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance, clean and prep offices and conference rooms for painting, move desks/bookshelves/tables in preparation of new hires.
  • Run various routine errands, as required, for the department. Assist with vehicle shuttling for repairs and cleaning.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Work schedules are flexible and will be worked out with the supervisor before beginning employment. This is a student employment position, but work-study eligible students are encouraged to apply.

Minimum qualifications include being enrolled in a degree seeking program at UNM, enrolled at least half-time (6 hours) at UNM for fall and spring semesters (audit hours do not count), and if Work Study, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.

Preferred qualifications include the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, database management skills, computer and software application skills, experience with scheduling appointments and meetings, ability to carry out detailed tasks, ability to understand and follow safety procedures, ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects, ability to work independently, ability to pass Defensive Driving class and submit valid drivers license for clearance to Safety and Risk Services, and the ability to lift furniture up to 30 lbs.
