Summary
The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
Position Responsibilities
Perform blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, and decontamination.
Update patient information; collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
Explain the venipuncture or other specimen collection in a clear, courteous manner; demonstrate technique using straight or butterfly needles.
Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required.
Check all test requisitions or computer labels against script to ensure 100% correct.
Package specimens for transport, store samples at required temperature, accurately label and follow specific transport protocols.
Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations; attend annual department trainings.
Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Minimum Qualifications
Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment as required.
Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast‑paced lab or hospital setting.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
High school diploma or GED.
Minimum 2 years of experience in a phlebotomy role, including experience with all ages from pediatric to geriatric.
