The Role

Based in the Australian Embassy in Washington DC, the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) is seeking an experienced, commercially focussed, business development professional to develop & drive all of Australia’s strategic initiatives and imperatives across the Space economy.

The Trade Director role is directly responsible for tangibly supporting the USA market development ambitions & objectives of a growing portfolio of innovative Australian Space and Space technology companies in addition to working collaboratively with our investment teams across the breadth of the US Space sector to support the foreign direct investment (FDI) from the United States into Australia.

Working closely with key Australian Government stakeholders and Defence partners, you will build and execute on a pipeline of commercial opportunities across Access to Space, Advanced Communications & Enabling Infrastructure & Advanced Manufacturing to deliver nation building capability for the Australian economy.

The successful candidate will possess well-established sector knowledge across the US Space sector and bring an expansive network of commercial & US Government relationships to support the business development needs of the role. You must have experience in developing new business opportunities resulting in commercial outcomes, and a demonstrated commitment to high performance.

Experience across the Space sector technology, anticipating technology trends and existing relationships with scaleups and established multinational tech companies through to venture capital and ecosystem partners will be highly valued.

Duties include

Working with our onshore sector teams, manage an engaged portfolio of Australian Space Technology businesses, to gain a deep understanding of their operations, objectives and value proposition and provide tangible connectivity to accelerate their US market access to drive sales outcomes. Expand & build deep commercial relationships and networks across the US Space sector to enable greater engagement for Australian businesses in market Identify opportunities to promote Australia as a world-class exporter of products, services and knowledge at relevant conferences and business events Responsible for contributing to team KPIs and meeting individual KPIs, by assisting Australian companies to achieve commercial results in the US. Manage a targeted portfolio of Australian clients from the Defence & Security sector and grow Australia’s exports to the market by providing trade advice to these clients. Leverage your deep US Defence sector network to identify partners and customers for Australian clients; and continuously grow this network to support future connections. Identify opportunities for Australian businesses by leveraging local market expertise and undertaking sector research. Plan and support visits to the market by Australian businesses, helping to design visit programs that deliver trade outcomes and foster new business linkages. Work collaboratively within the Austrade network to contribute to service delivery and achieve desired outcomes, including by maintaining a strong connection with Austrade’s Australia-based staff. Uphold a best practice approach to client servicing and embrace Austrade’s digital approach to client service delivery. Ensure a strong working relationship with other Australian government agencies in the market including the Department of Industry Science & Resources, The Australian Space Agency and state and territory government agencies. Establish and maintain close working relationships with targeted peak industry bodies, working closely with Austrade’s Australia-based team.

Eligibility

To be eligible for consideration and appointment you must have:

Work Authorisation - to be eligible for employment with Austrade in the USA, candidates must be legally authorised to live and work in the USA at the time of appointment. Language - the successful candidate must be a highly motivated team member, fluent in written and spoken English. Security Clearance - the successful applicant must be willing to complete an Entry Level Screening Pack and be confirmed as a suitable person to access Government resources prior to commencement in the role.
