The University of California, Berkeley’s Department of Sociology invites applications for a tenured
Associate or Full Professor
position, with an anticipated
start date of July 1, 2026 . This hire is a key part of the multi-year “Anti-Black Racism and Social Inclusion” initiative, aiming to build a dynamic cluster of scholars addressing anti-blackness across various institutions and disciplines. We welcome candidates at the Assistant Professor level (or equivalent) with a record meriting tenure. The university is dedicated to strengthening democratic structures currently in crisis, and this initiative centers anti-blackness as a fundamental organizing feature of social and political institutions, both in the U.S. and globally. We seek scholars who are leading or emerging voices in conversations on anti-blackness as it relates to outcomes in various social domains, and who demonstrate a commitment to advancing anti-racism. Ideal candidates will contribute to theoretical, conceptual, and empirical understandings of how social institutions can foster safety and well-being in a democratic society grappling with its roots in racism, anti-blackness, and white supremacy. Interdisciplinary expertise in critical epistemologies, such as critical race theory, Black intellectual traditions, and Black feminist traditions, is highly valued. Responsibilities include a demonstrated commitment to this research arc, as well as publications, undergraduate and graduate teaching/mentoring, and administrative service, practice, and public intellectualism/partnerships. Basic:
PhD or equivalent international degree at the time of application. •
Preferred:
Ability to develop a nationally recognized program, collaborate across disciplines on research initiatives related to Anti-Black Racism and Social Inclusion, strong research productivity, potential for extramural funding, and a commitment to teaching and mentoring. The salary range is $99,600 – $236,000 (9-month academic year), with competitive off-scale salary components available. Application Window: •
