Overview
Lexington School for the Deaf seeks a transformative and visionary Superintendent who is deeply committed to advancing the educational and individual development of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in New York City. This leader will drive Lexington’s mission forward, ensuring it remains a premier institution for Deaf education while addressing the unique challenges and opportunities within its diverse community. The Superintendent is the face of the organization and works closely with the Board of Trustees, government agencies, and the public to align operations with the mission and vision. The position reports to the Board of Trustees and is responsible for multiple functions with monthly reporting to the Board. Location: Lexington School for the Deaf, East Elmhurst, Queens. Affiliated agencies include the Lexington Center for Mental Health Services, Inc., the Lexington Vocational Services Center, Inc., and the Lexington Hearing and Speech Center, Inc. Salary: $220,000. Benefits include a comprehensive package and vesting in the New York State Pension System after five years. Lexington School for the Deaf seeks a superintendent who is deeply committed to Deaf education and to the development of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in New York City. The ideal candidate will have fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and a strong understanding of Deaf culture, with the ability to lead a diverse, multicultural school community. The Superintendent leads with the Board of Trustees and maintains alignment with Lexington’s mission and vision while engaging with government agencies and the public. The Superintendent oversees multiple functions including finance, information technology operations, education instruction, policy development, and outreach, and provides monthly reports to the Board of Trustees. Positions reporting to the Superintendent include School Principals, the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Pupil Personnel Services, the Director of Human Resources and Operations, and the Directors of the Agencies. Responsibilities
Organization-Wide Serve as the organization’s visionary and strategic leader in analyzing trends in deaf education and related services. Serve as chief liaison with the 4201 schools, the 4201 Schools Association, the State Education Department (SED), the Board of Trustees, and the public. Develop and implement strategic plans to expand Lexington’s programs and reputation as a leader in services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals at local, state, and national levels. Strengthen the educational program and develop long-range plans to achieve the mission and vision. Develop personnel practices and procedures and recommend policies for Board consideration. Prepare and administer an annual budget for all Lexington entities with CFO and Finance Committee approval. Foster relationships between the School, the Center, government agencies, and the public. Represent the Lexington Organization externally, developing relationships to engage leadership, build philanthropic support, and generate revenue and program opportunities; direct fundraising strategies for government and private sectors. School Provide educational leadership to enhance and expand Lexington School’s academic programs and curriculum. Develop and oversee annual and long-term programmatic and operational goals and evaluate progress toward these goals. Foster collaborative relations with the Lexington School Teacher Association and serve as lead negotiator for the CBA with counsel. Develop and oversee the School’s public relations program and welcome and orient VIPs. Maintain accreditation with the New York State Education Department, CEASD, and NYSAIS. Affiliates Develop and implement goals for Lexington’s affiliates and measure achievement of outcomes. Board of Trustees Coordinate and administer board activities as requested by the Board through its Co-Presidents. Collaborate with the board and staff to position the organization for growth and sustainability. Ensure compliance with board policies and applicable laws and regulations; propose policies for board consideration. Participate in regular meetings with the Co-Presidents of the Board of Trustees. Perform other duties as assigned by the Board of Trustees. Personal Development Engage in ongoing professional development related to management, governance, and trends in deaf education and special education. Qualifications
Required Qualifications Master’s Degree (MA) in Deaf Education (PhD preferred) or other relevant advanced degree. Eligibility for New York State School Building Leader Certification. Experience as a Superintendent, Principal, or Executive Director, preferably in a school for Deaf or special needs students. Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL). Knowledge of Deaf culture, needs, and issues. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of social service programs for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Strong leadership and multi-functional management skills. Knowledge of curriculum design and learning principles. Membership in professional organizations that enhance the School’s prestige. Salary & Benefits
