About the Role The
Project Manager
at Smith-Boughan Mechanical plays a critical role in managing commercial HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical projects from pre‑construction through closeout. This position oversees scheduling, budgeting, procurement, and subcontractor coordination while ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with scope and safety standards.
This role offers a unique opportunity to:

Key Responsibilities Project Management & Execution (45%)
Lead HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical projects from kickoff through completion.
Manage labor planning, procurement schedules, vendor/subcontractor coordination.
Ensure project performance aligns with contractual terms, code, and customer standards.
Client & Contractor Relations (20%)
Serve as the primary liaison between Smith‑Boughan and clients, engineers, or GCs.
Lead project meetings, deliver progress updates, and resolve conflicts diplomatically.
Build and maintain long‑term client relationships and pursue new business opportunities.
Financial Oversight (20%)
Monitor budgets, job costs, and margin performance.
Manage and review change orders, invoices, and cost projections.
Maintain accurate forecasting and profit reporting for each assigned project.
Field Coordination & Quality Assurance (15%)
Conduct routine site visits to review progress, enforce safety, and verify quality.
Work closely with foremen and field teams to address issues quickly and effectively.
Implement project‑specific quality control procedures and uphold company standards.
Measures of Performance (KPIs)
Safety performance of assigned projects.
Gross margin contribution and job cost accuracy.
Labor utilization and project efficiency.
Client satisfaction and survey results.
Overall annual performance review outcomes.
What We’re Looking For We’re seeking a
safety‑focused, results‑driven Project Manager
who thrives in fast‑paced environments and takes pride in delivering exceptional workmanship. Whether your background is in construction management, estimating, or the skilled trades, you bring leadership, organization, and a passion for quality to every project.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
2 or 4‑year degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (preferred but not required).
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in project management, estimating, or field supervision within commercial plumbing and/or HVAC.
Alternative Pathways: Candidates with strong hands‑on trade experience (e.g., Plumber, Pipefitter, Sheet Metal Mechanic) who have advanced into estimating or project management roles are strongly encouraged to apply regardless of education or years of experience.
Working knowledge of HVAC and plumbing systems, mechanical drawings, and construction practices.
Proficiency with estimating and project management software (e.g., Trimble® AutoBid, PlanGrid®, ProjectDocs®).
Strong communication and organization skills with the ability to lead teams and manage multiple priorities.
Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
Self‑starter, inspired to work independently.
Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to job sites across West Central and Northwest Ohio.
Preferred Qualifications
7+ years of project management experience on large‑scale commercial or institutional projects.
Deep understanding of HVAC, controls, plumbing, and piping coordination.
PMP certification or supervisory training (a plus).
Demonstrated success managing multiple subcontractors and high‑value jobs.
Compensation & Benefits
Base Salary:
$80,000 – $110,000 (based on experience, knowledge, and certifications)
