Job Overview The City of Elk Grove Public Works Department is seeking a Maintenance Specialist (Streets & Traffic) to support the Operations & Maintenance Division. The role involves planning, constructing, operating, and maintaining roadways, sidewalks, curb‑ramps, traffic signals, streetlights, signs, landscaping, and drainage.

Responsibilities

Perform specialized maintenance on streets, sidewalks, landscapes, irrigation, traffic devices, and storm‑water systems.

Coordinate projects, schedule work, assist with cost estimates, and provide lead direction to staff.

Monitor contractors, ensure compliance with standards, and maintain accurate logs and records.

Inspect infrastructure for safety and structural integrity, mark areas needing repair, and maintain shop and garage areas.

Install, maintain, and repair traffic control signs, legends, and devices following codes and ordinances.

Perform inventory control of maintenance equipment, parts, and supplies.

Participate in emergency response to storm‑water or traffic incidents.

Qualifications

Completion of 12th grade with related training and a minimum of 2 years of responsible experience in inspection, maintenance, or repair duties.

Valid California driver’s license and proficiency operating motorized equipment, hand and power tools, and light‑to‑heavy vehicles.

Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, regulations, and safety standards.

Ability to read construction drawings, estimate materials and labor, and prepare cost estimates.

Excellent written and oral communication and the ability to work independently with good judgment and initiative.

Licenses and Certifications

International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control certificate.

Depending on assignment, additional certifications such as Class A driver’s license, IMSA Signs and Markings Level I, IMSA Traffic Safety Specialist, and IMSA Traffic Safety Through Work Zones.
