Traffic Accident Investigator (TAI) is responsible for investigating all types of traffic crashes, determining fault, issuing state citations, and testifying in court. TAI frees up patrol officers by handling non‑priority calls such as disabled vehicles and traffic direction.
Key Responsibilities
Investigate crashes including minor, fatalities, DUI, hit & runs; prepare crash report and drawings per Florida guidelines. Determine fault and issue state citation if applicable. Investigate theft reports and gather evidence with witness statements. Respond to court subpoenas to testify; present testimony and depositions in court. Prepare offense/incidents reports for theft, burglary, stolen auto parts, property damage, traffic hazards, runaways, missing persons, lost/stolen tags, recovered stolen vehicles, animal complaints, phone complaints, abandoned vehicles/property. Conduct witness, victim, suspect interviews for traffic crashes and criminal acts. Respond to non‑priority calls such as disabled vehicles and traffic direction. Process crime scenes for latent fingerprints and other physical evidence using powder, tape, cards, digital cameras; follow chain of evidence. Investigate citizen complaints of truck parking ordinances, city ordinance violations, parking complaints. Attend city functions; perform bicycle registrations and explain crime prevention. Assist citizens with VIN verification for title applications. Provide emergency medical assistance to injured persons at crash scene (CPR, advanced first aid). Work nights, weekends, and holidays. Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED. Some related experience. Must attend 104‑hour Police Service Aide Foundations course if not already completed. Certifications upon hire in Traffic Control and Direction, Parking Enforcement, First Responder First Aid, CPR. Valid Florida Driver’s license. EEO Statement
