Barrow County BOC
This position is responsible for inspecting buildings, storage sites, and other installations for compliance with local, state and federal fire prevention laws, ordinances and codes aimed at improving and maintaining public safety and security through inspections and fire prevention programs.
This job is a safety sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Barrow County Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace. Conducts inspections to ensure buildings are constructed safely and contain appropriate fire safeguards.
Investigates code violation complaints such as building over-occupancy, burning violations, and improper storage of hazardous materials.
Performs routine surveys of water systems for fire protection services and proper operation of sprinkler systems in public and private buildings.
Maintains pre‑fire plan files and assists Fire Marshal in coordinating plans with emergency managers, emergency personnel and law enforcement personnel.
Assist Fire Marshal in maintaining hazardous chemical information for the department in regards to SARA Title III concerning Right to Know, including MSDS.
Assist Fire Marshal in all arson investigations and the investigations of all fires resulting in death or injury; determines the cause and origin of fires; collects and preserves arson evidence and questions suspects;
Submits reports to insurance agencies, law enforcement offices, and the State Fire Marshal. Provides expert testimony in court as to the origin of fires during arson trials.
Assist in a research and advisory capacity regarding fire protection and provides technical reports and assistance to the department on these issues.
Conducts plan reviews for new and remodeled construction; makes recommendations for needed modifications and changes in existing building codes.
Maintains records and completes reports on fire prevention and investigation activities; compiles statistics on fire losses and deaths; investigates false alarms.
Assist the Fire Marshal in submitting budget requests for fire prevention materials and equipment.
Plans, conducts and assists in public safety programs; speaks to various groups on the subject of fire prevention and related matters.
Instructs fire department personnel on inspection techniques, preservation of arson evidence and fire safety standards.
Performs related duties.
Minimum Requirements to Perform Work
High school diploma or equivalent.
Five (5) years of related work experience.
Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience.
Certified Plans Examiner.
Certified Fire Investigator (Modules 1 and 2).
Fire inspector Certification.
Valid State of Georgia Class B Driver’s License.
and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record.
Preferred
National Registry Intermediate EMS (EMT or Paramedic).
Certified Fire Apparatus Operator.

Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of fire suppression, prevention, inspection, and investigation.
Knowledge of department rules and regulations, fire codes and ordinances, and fire hazards and investigation methods.
Knowledge of fire chemistry.

Knowledge of fire cause and determination and the preservation of fire scenes and evidence.
Knowledge of architectural and engineering terminology.
Knowledge of arrest, search, and court procedures.
Skill in reading and interpretation of blueprints.
Ability to read and interpret fire code laws and regulations.
Ability to react quickly and effectively under adverse conditions.
Ability to establish effective working relationships with the public and with contractors.
Ability to operate audio‑visual equipment in investigations.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
