The Head Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of all patrons in and around the pool and/or pond areas at Camp Foster while providing direct leadership and supervision to the lifeguard staff. In addition to performing all lifeguard duties, the Head Lifeguard oversees daily aquatic operations, supports training and performance of lifeguards, and serves as the on-site lead to ensure a safe, clean, and well-managed aquatic environment for all campers and staff. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervision & Leadership

Provide day-to-day supervision and guidance to lifeguards during assigned shifts. Serve as the lead lifeguard on duty, ensuring adequate coverage and adherence to safety protocols. Support onboarding, mentoring, and training of new lifeguards. Assist the Aquatics Director with staff scheduling, coverage adjustments, and break rotations as needed. Monitor lifeguard performance and provide coaching, feedback, and corrective guidance when necessary. Act as the primary point of contact for lifeguards during emergencies or operational issues. Safety & Operations

Maintain constant visual surveillance of all pool areas and/or pond, ensuring rapid detection of distressed swimmers or unsafe behavior. Enforce facility rules and regulations courteously but firmly to prevent accidents and maintain order. Recognize and respond quickly and effectively to all emergencies. Perform water rescues, administer CPR, AED, and First Aid as required, and remain composed under pressure. Ensure rescue equipment and first aid kits are inspected daily and remain fully functional. Oversee daily pool cleaning and ensure lifeguards complete assigned maintenance tasks. Complete incident reports and communicate safety concerns promptly to the Aquatics Director. Training & Communication

Lead or assist with in-service trainings, skill evaluations, and safety drills. Communicate pool schedules, pond schedules, special events, and operational changes to lifeguard staff. Promote clear communication and teamwork among aquatic staff to maintain coordinated safety coverage. Teach swim lessons as assigned. JOB REQUIREMENTS

Must be at least 21 years of age. Current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, and First Aid. Prior lifeguard experience required; leadership or supervisory experience preferred. Strong swimming ability and physical endurance. Demonstrated leadership, reliability, and ability to supervise peers effectively. Exceptional focus and ability to maintain vigilance for extended periods. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills. Ability to remain calm, decisive, and professional during emergencies.
