Duties

You may serve on a field crew responsible for monitoring a variety of wildlife species and their habitats, including piping plovers; conducting surveys for mammalian species including black bear activity; installing and tending acoustic monitoring equipment in remote field locations (frog and/or bat monitoring); monitoring campgrounds for problem bear and other wildlife monitoring.

GS‑06 : You will assist a GS‑7 crew lead with directing the field crew. Successful applicants will serve on teams that may include permanent and seasonal NPS staff, interns, volunteers, and staff from other agencies. You may be asked to occasionally lead volunteers in selected projects or work independently.

GS‑07 : You will serve as a program lead to implement natural resource management projects involving integrated pest management (IPM), piping plover protection, and BARK Ranger volunteers, with an emphasis on visitor education. Duties include training and coordinating volunteers; identifying shorebirds and mammals; collecting field data, recording in databases; implementing prevention and control strategies; providing outreach/education content for social media posts; coordinating outreach and media contacts; and administrative tasks.

A portion of time will be dedicated to project logistics and preparatory groundwork, equipment acquisition/maintenance, data entry, preparation of Field and Project Reports, and conducting administrative tasks in an office setting.

Requirements

U.S. Citizenship required.

Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.

Direct Deposit:

Participation in Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program required.

Driver’s License:

Must operate a government or private motor vehicle; valid license required; submission of Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record necessary.

Uniform:

Must wear NPS uniform; allowance provided.

Travel requirement:

Overnight travel away from home expected; overnight backcountry camping for 5-10 day periods once a month or more.

Minimum Age Requirement:

Applicants must be at least 18 years old or meet certain 16‑year‑old criteria with high‑school graduation or equivalent.

Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

GS‑05 Experience:

At least one full year of specialized experience comparable to GS‑04. Activities include wildlife census, control, and database management. Include hours per week worked.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree with major in biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, mathematics; at least six semester hours related to wildlife conservation. Submit transcripts.

Combination:

Combination of education and experience as described.

GS‑06 Experience:

At least one full year of specialized experience comparable to GS‑05. Activities include endangered species management, piping plover monitoring, IPM protocols. Include hours per week worked.

Education:

One full year (18 semester hours) of graduate level study in wildlife management or conservation. Submit transcripts.

Combination:

Combination of education and experience. Include hours per week worked and transcripts.

GS‑07 Experience:

At least one full year of specialized experience comparable to GS‑06. Activities include leading wildlife crews, coordinating endangered species management, piping plover monitoring, protocol development. Include hours per week worked.

Education:

One full year (18 semester hours) of graduate level study in wildlife management or conservation. Submit transcripts.

Combination:

Combination of education and experience. Include hours per week worked and transcripts.

Volunteer Experience Volunteer work through National Service programs and other organizations is credited towards qualification.
