The starting rate of pay is based on qualifications and/or experience that exceed the minimum requirements.

Under general supervision, performs skilled inspection work in securing compliance with established electrical codes and preferably one or more of the following areas of the building trades: building, mechanical and plumbing. Work involves inspecting a variety of electrical installations for materials and safety precautions; interpretation, application and enforcement of rules and regulations relating to the construction of new buildings, the repair or alteration of existing buildings or structures; and interpretation, application and enforcement of rules and regulations.

Employee may also inspect buildings and facilities for electrical hazards and specifications for new construction. Employee must interpret plans and specifications for proposed installation to ensure the codes and ordinances have been followed, but must exercise independent judgment in applying these standards to a variety of work situations. May be required to perform inspections of existing construction for violations of adopted codes on behalf of the Planning, Zoning & Building Department. Work may also involve responding to man-made or natural disasters to assist in recovery efforts. Reports to the Director of Planning, Zoning & Building and/or the assigned Building Inspector III.

Performs plan review and inspects electrical installations and facilities for compliance with code requirements; checks plans and specifications for the proper installation and connections of fixtures; investigates complaints concerning buildings that may not comply with electrical codes.

Performs plan review and inspects buildings in the process of construction, alteration or repair for compliance with building and State energy code requirements as well as the requirements of the Americans With Disabilities Act approved plans, and construction and safety practices; examines plot plans, structural framing, insulation installation, and general arrangement of building facilities for sufficiency of design and materials.

Performs plan review and Inspects new residences, businesses, schools and other buildings or structures for conformance with applicable building safety standards, zoning codes and ordinances; issues inspection certificates for approved installation.

Receives and answers inquiries concerning inspections and permit procedures; receives and pursues complaints alleging code or zoning violations, performing inspections as necessary.

Maintains all necessary reports and records pertaining to inspections and code enforcement work. Attends and participates in meetings, or prepares correspondence, with builders and contractors to advise them of code changes and violations at construction sites.

If licensed, performs plan review and Inspects plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems of building structures; reviews newly issued building permits along with plans and specifications for proper plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and ventilation systems; assists and advises contractors and others regarding pertinent regulations.

Reviews and studies building code regulations to stay informed of changes in building codes and ordinances; completes necessary classes to maintain required inspection certification.

Graduation from high school, plus required experience based on level and licensing as listed below.

Must possess a valid Florida's Driver's License or the ability to obtain within 30 days of employment, and have and maintain an acceptable driving record.

Five years of practical experience in residential and commercial electrical inspection and/or plans examiner work.

Must hold a State of Florida Standard Electrical Inspector/Plans Examiner within 30 days of employment.

Additional licensure in building, mechanical, coastal construction, electrical, plumbing, 1- and 2-family dwellings preferred.

Equivalent ICC certifications to the Florida license categories of inspection preferred.

Thorough knowledge of modern principles, standards, and methods of building construction materials and equipment, as well as accepted safety standards.

Some knowledge of the principles of civil and structural engineering and of the fundamental principles of building design.

Some knowledge of the legal procedures involved in the proper enforcement of building laws and prosecution of violators.

Knowledge and skill in proper inspection methods, coupled with the ability to apply them properly

Considerable knowledge of the Town's construction requirements and zoning code.

Some knowledge of the legal procedure as related to the enforcement of construction, zoning, and code enforcement ordinances in the Town.

Considerable public relations experience and the ability to enforce departmental policies and procedures and handle complaints in a courteous and professional manner.

Ability to interpret plans in a variety of formats including digital and paper to determine conformity to building regulations.

Ability to maintain records and create reports.

Skill in detecting inferior materials, and hazards of fire and collapse in building plan preparation and in construction and causing the correction of same within the minimum requirements of the governing codes. Software skills, or equivalent systems, for the following programs: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Laserfiche document imaging, and EPL or similar enterprise database.
