Position Summary University Police Officers enforce all New York State and local laws, as well as the Student Code of Conduct on the grounds of the State University of New York. They possess full police officer powers under Criminal Procedure Law, Section 1.20(34)(s), and are responsible for the full range of professional police duties. Officers assist other local, state, and federal agencies with investigations, collect evidence, question witnesses, and testify in court. They are also actively involved in campus communities, providing education on personal safety, risk awareness, crime prevention, alcohol awareness, sexual assault prevention, and other community safety issues.
Responsibilities In addition to the duties outlined above, University Police Officers:
Enforce all New York State and local laws and the Student Code of Conduct on campus.
Assist local, state, and federal police with investigations and evidence collection.
Provide testimony in legal proceedings regarding alleged criminal actions.
Educate community members on safety and prevention topics.
Qualifications
Successful placement on the UPO-1 Civil Service examination list or appointment with a 1‑year permanent competitive service as a UPO-1.
Meeting established physical and medical requirements.
Possession of a valid unrestricted New York State motor vehicle operator’s license.
Legal eligibility to carry a firearm.
Completion of all requirements for certification as a police officer in New York State.
Promotion Requirements
One year of permanent service as a University Police Communications and Security Specialist 1 or 2, AND:
Two years of active military service with an honorable discharge or under conditions in the NYS Restoration of Honor Act AND 30 college semester credit hours; OR
Successful completion of a New York State Municipal Police Training Council approved Pre‑Employment Training Program AND eligibility to complete the second phase of such training program that has not lapsed AND 30 college semester credit hours; OR
60 or more college semester credit hours.
