Student Assistant Duties and Levels

Student Assistant I – Entry Level/Semi‑skilled

Work is under immediate supervision. Tasks are standardized, routine, and repetitive, often involving specialized equipment, software, or tools following established procedures. The supervisor assigns work, monitors progress, and provides detailed instructions.

Student Assistant II – Intermediate/Advanced

Work is under general supervision with autonomy to set methods for tasks. Duties are varied and less routine, requiring moderate independent judgment, analysis, and decision‑making. Employees may access and use sophisticated data systems and confidential information and need at least one year of experience in a similar assignment.

Student Assistant III – Specialist/Lead

Work is under general supervision. Assignments demand a broad range of skills and involve significant independent judgment and decision‑making. Employees may direct lower‑level student assistants and must have at least two years of experience in a similar assignment.

Eligibility & Qualifications Education and Experience:

Student Assistant I : Little or no prior experience or education required.

Student Assistant II : Some previous knowledge, experience, or education required.

Student Assistant III : Prior experience, education, or specialized skills required.

Skills and Competencies:

Ability to perform job assignments.

Limited independent judgment and decision‑making (level dependent).

Balance work and studies.

Qualifications:

Students must be enrolled in classes for the current semester and have been awarded federal work‑study through the financial aid office.

Conditions of Employment

Student Assistants may not exceed 19.5 working hours per week during the fall and spring semesters and may work a maximum of 28 hours per week outside of those semesters.

Student Assistants are prohibited from being employed by the District in any other capacity during the same fiscal year (July 1 – June 30).

Employment is contingent upon verification of CalWORKs work‑study award, class schedule, employment history, background verification, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees.

Regular attendance is an essential job function. Inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude retention.

Student Assistants are mandated reporters under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with relevant policies and Title IX.

Selected candidates must

complete the following prior to employment:

Have fingerprints taken by a Live Scan computer at the candidate’s expense (clearance must be received prior to first day of employment).

Present original documents for proof of eligibility to work in the United States, including a Social Security Card.

Participate in a new‑hire onboarding appointment with an Employment Services Representative.
