I. POSITION SUMMARY Install, test, maintain, and repair electrical equipment, apparatus, relays, wiring, and infrastructure in power substations.

II. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Install, test, maintain, adjust, troubleshoot, and repair substation and line equipment which includes, but is not limited to, transformers, regulators, tap changers, circuit breakers, circuit switchers, reclosers, switches, bus work, insulators, arresters, wiring, battery banks, control panels, relays, SCADA equipment, foundations, structures, and buildings.

Operate substation and line equipment, including switches and reclosers.

Write and review substation switching orders.

Complies with work rules, safety practices and PPE requirements.

Inventory and maintain records of substation equipment.

Routinely inspect equipment.

Establish and maintain equipment maintenance schedules.

Perform testing and maintenance procedures on substation and line equipment.

Commission, document, and put in service substation and line equipment.

Coordinate activities of substation contractors and cooperative personnel when needed.

Work cooperatively with line crews and engineering department.

Make presentations and write reports to management as requested.

Attend training to stay current on the equipment, apparatus, software, relays, tools, wiring, and infrastructure required to efficiently and successfully operate cooperative substations and T&D systems.

Provide training to cooperative personnel as needed.

Ability to read and interpret electric system diagrams, layouts, conduit and grounding plans, one-lines, schematics, and wiring diagrams.

Maintain knowledge of cable locating, fault location, power quality equipment, and related relay, regulator, and recloser software and meters of all kinds.

If journeyman lineman certified, perform all duties of a journeyman lineman as directed by the Engineering & Operations Manager.

All other duties as assigned.

III. SPECIFICATIONS

Experience

Minimum of three years’ experience as a journeyman substation technician with apparatus and relay experience.

Preference will be given to a candidate with journeyman lineman certification.

Proven interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

Ability to direct work of cooperative and contractor crews.

Ability to work with minimum supervision.

Self-motivated.

Basic knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Word, and Excel software programs.

Able to travel as required.

Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

B. Physical Requirements Job requires very heavy physical effort equivalent to continuous labor involving the use of heavy tools, materials, and/or equipment. Job is characterized by very demanding, full‑body exertion and strenuous lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, etc.

Crouching, stooping, reaching, twisting, turning, and balancing required while climbing and working on power poles and in bucket or truck. Lift, carry, pull, and push items in excess of 60 pounds in adverse terrain and adverse weather conditions.

C. Work Environment

Work Demand

Work pressure, disturbances of work flow, and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis.

Working Conditions

Extensive and continuous exposure to hazardous conditions. Dangerous work situations. High likelihood of serious injury or illness if proper precautions are not taken.
