Responsibilities

24‑hour comprehensive operational responsibility for delivery and quality of patient care in the designated area(s).

Foster interdepartmental/interprofessional collaboration; represent unit and Nursing on committees.

Develop and implement performance initiatives to ensure optimal patient safety, outcomes, and customer satisfaction.

Lead and manage daily work activities of unit staff; ensure quality, productivity, functional excellence, and efficiency.

Provide guidance and support for staffing, budget compliance; assist in staffing decisions such as hiring, termination, coaching, and counseling.

Assist in development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure a safe and effective work environment.

Implement training, monitoring, and operations initiatives to secure compliance with ethical and legal practices, accreditation, and regulatory/government regulations.

Assist management in achieving strategic and operational objectives.

Manage selection, scheduling, supervision, retention, and evaluation of employees; develop and mentor staff.

Provide leadership and communication to maintain a competent and engaged employee group through department meetings, performance appraisals, coaching, and recognition.

Facilitate effective team dynamics and teambuilding; lead department process improvements.

Meet or exceed thresholds for employee engagement metrics.

Establish two‑way communication with staff; coach staff on efficient communication and include patient/family in care planning.

Service Essential Functions

Plan and organize day‑to‑day department operations, schedule, and activities; set priorities and functional standards.

Drive department service standards to improve patient/customer satisfaction.

Serve on entity committees; model service orientation, resolve concerns, and channel issues appropriately.

Maintain ongoing interactions with patients, families, physicians, and staff to improve care and service.

Quality/Safety Essential Functions

Ensure a safe and effective working environment; monitor and revise the safety plan and accreditation/regulatory guidelines.

Use information systems to enhance operations; support performance improvement and data management.

Optimize safe outcomes through monitoring workflow, reporting near misses, and implementing solutions; adopt lean principles.

Monitor compliance with policies and procedures; perform actions upon non‑compliance.

Prepare measurable goals and action plans aligned with Houston Methodist priorities.

Finance Essential Functions

Assist in department budget development and ensure cost‑effective operations.

Manage and audit expenses within approved budget; meet revenue/expense targets.

Develop staffing plans and schedules for cost‑effective patient care.

Implement strategies to achieve financial targets and staffing needs.

Growth/Innovation Essential Functions

Identify and implement innovative solutions for practice or workflow changes; lead unit projects and shared governance activities.

Evaluate processes, recommend, and implement change; follow through for sustainable impact.

Build strategic relationships with other departments and units to achieve business goals.

Seek developmental opportunities for self and staff; maintain ongoing development plans.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited nursing school.

Experience:

Three years of nursing experience with one year in a progressive leadership role; for internal candidates, two years of nursing experience that includes charge nurse responsibilities.

Licenses & Certifications – Required:

Registered Nurse (Texas State Licensure); BLS or Instructor (AHA); Magnet ANCC Recognized Certification.

Licenses & Certifications – Preferred:

ACLS or Instructor (AHA); NIHSTROKE or Instructor (AHA); NVCRISIS or Instructor.

Skills & Abilities

Demonstrated skills and competencies for safe job performance; ongoing assessments.

Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English for essential functions.

Effective communication across channels with patients, physicians, family, and staff; customer‑service focus.
