The City of Chanute, Kansas is now accepting applications for a full-time Firefighter serving a population of 9,112. Duties include general firefighting work in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires and the maintenance of department equipment, apparatus and quarters. Firefighters maintain visibility with the general public, the private sector and other local governments. This position is under the supervision of the Shift Commander.

Requirements Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, minimum 18 years of age, excellent health, U.S. citizen, no criminal record or drug use, good moral character and possess a valid Kansas driver’s license. Applicants must have a general knowledge of the geography of the City and surrounding area. Must have the ability to understand carry out oral and written instructions, to develop advanced firefighting skills and to react quickly and calmly in emergency conditions. Firefighting work has elements of personal danger. Must be able to successfully complete Firefighter I certification & the Department’s Probationary Workbook within the probationary period. Applicants must have the mechanical aptitude and ability to learn to operate relatively complex equipment and the mental capacity to learn a variety of fire codes. It is important to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees as this is 24 hour shift work. These hours require close contact and harmonizing work relations with other shift personnel.

Pay Starting Hourly Wage: $15.49 - $16.57 D.O.Q.

Starting Annual Wage: $45,106 - $48,251
