Prince George’s County offers a dynamic and inclusive workplace across its 30 diverse agencies, dedicated to serving the County’s residents. The Office of the Sheriff seeks Deputy Sheriff – Private (Entry‑Level) candidates for its Winter 2025/2026 Academy Class.
About the Position The Deputy Sheriff – Private is a full‑time, permanent entry‑level role (Grade W21). Prior law enforcement experience is not required; however, current students or recent graduates of an MPCTC‑accredited institution are encouraged to apply. Candidates with at least one year of prior Maryland law‑enforcement experience and MPCTC certification should apply for the Experienced Deputy Sheriff announcement.
Examples of Work
Provide effective law‑enforcement services to County residents.
Perform investigations, process warrants, and extradite persons wanted on criminal warrants.
Transport prisoners to and from various institutions and courts statewide.
Arrest, detain, and process prisoners in custody of the Office.
Serve civil processes, summonses, and court orders.
Execute writs and maintain security in courtrooms.
Monitor prisoners in holding areas and perform court‑related evictions.
Complete and submit reports.
Minimum Qualifications
U.S. citizen.
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
At least 20 years and 6 months of age (21+ at academy graduation).
Valid driver’s license with 6 months of post‑license driving experience.
Pass all required written, agility, and oral examinations.
Successfully pass a background investigation.
Preferred Qualifications
60+ college credit hours.
Current MPCTC student or recent graduate with certification.

– Create an online profile and submit an application. Phase 2
– Pass the Applicant Physical Requirement Test (APRT), written exam, and submit pre‑employment documents. Phase 3
– Initial interview, background investigation, oral board interview, polygraph, psychological and medical examinations, and final hiring decision.
