The Apprentice PLT will assist in the construction, installation, rearrangement, maintenance, operation, removal and inspection of electrical power transmission, distribution systems, and communication networks, including substations and services. The Powerline Technician Apprentice will drive and operate line trucks and associated auxiliary equipment, as well as serve as a member of a line crew responsible for maintenance and repair of both overhead and underground electrical distribution systems.

Responsibilities

Assist in the construction, maintenance and troubleshooting of electrical overhead and underground distribution systems, transmission systems, communication networks and substations, and related components; and use all associated tools and equipment

Assist with line maintenance in a safe and efficient manner utilizing de-energized, live line rubber glove, stick, and bare hand techniques

Maintain a safe working environment in accordance with safety legislation, company standards, policies and procedures and approved safe work practices

Perform regular vehicle inspections, traffic control set up and equipment inspections as per the MOL and MTO Hwy Traffic Act and K-Line’s policies

Assist in operating, installing, maintaining, and repairing voltage controlling, protection and metering equipment and streetlighting systems and components

Assist with inspecting and testing overhead and underground power lines, cables and auxiliary equipment using electrical test equipment

Operate company equipment such as RBDs, aerial devices, pole and cable trailers, tension machines and other motorized devices to provide for safe and efficient installation of electrical distribution and transmission equipment

Use climbing techniques to work aloft to install, maintain and repair associated equipment and hardware

Maintain good public relations with persons inside and outside the company

Maintain personal and group safety at all times

Respond to unscheduled outages as the result of weather, component failures, etc.

Be a positive team member through open communication and active participation in crew tasks

Respond to on-call duties when required

Qualifications

Completion of High School Diploma or equivalent is required

Minimum two (2) years’ experience in a construction environment

Minimum valid DZ Driver’s licence

Post-secondary education in a related field is an asset

Mechanical aptitude with comfort and familiarity with tools

Ability to climb poles, work at heights and work in extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time

Strong communication, teamwork and customer service skills

Excellent problem-solving skills

Safety focused with strong attention to detail
