POSITION SUMMARY The Medical Laboratory Technician - Medical Laboratory Scientist performs specimen processing, testing, and reporting of test results in compliance with regulatory requirements, policy and procedures, and the TCRHCC’s goal of providing quality patient care. The position is in the laboratory that provides sub-specialties of service in a hospital setting: chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, blood bank, microbiology, and clinical microscopy. The laboratory provides 24-hour coverage and rotates day, evening, or night shifts, weekends, holidays and occasional overtime. Qualifications

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS Education

(Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Laboratory Scientist) High school graduate or GED, AND Sixty (60) hours of courses in an institution accredited by a recognized regional or national accreditation agency with additional specified coursework, or For Medical Laboratory Technician: official military medical laboratory procedures course of at least 50 weeks and held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician) or equivalent, plus completion of at least 60 hours of accredited coursework as detailed in the original description. For Medical Laboratory Scientist: baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution, and completion of the specified 48 semester hours of medical laboratory technology/clinical science, or 48 semester hours across subjects including chemistry, biology, and related laboratory science. License/Certification Medical Laboratory Technician: certification from a nationally recognized agency within 18 months of hire; certification must remain unexpired and in good standing for duration of employment. Medical Laboratory Scientist: Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technologist or Specialist certification from a nationally recognized agency within 18 months of hire; certification must remain unexpired and in good standing for duration of employment. Experience Medical Laboratory Technician: six (6) months documented bench experience in each specialty including blood bank, microbiology, chemistry and hematology. Medical Laboratory Scientist: minimum of one (1) year of approved clinical laboratory experience, including clinical rotation through blood bank, microbiology, chemistry and hematology. Responsibilities

Essential functions Medical Laboratory Technician Follows the laboratory’s established policies, processes and procedures for specimen collection, handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results in all specialties of service. Performs and documents corrective actions when test systems are not within established performance. Adheres to quality assurance by performing and documenting quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and instrument preventive maintenance. Performs proficiency testing and attestation that proficiency testing samples are tested according to protocol. Maintains skills and knowledge for testing methods, instrument use, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration. Stays informed about factors that influence test results and evaluates validity of patient results. Maintains inventory control to ensure adequate supplies and reagents for continuous operation. Participates in laboratory training for non-laboratory personnel or student programs and supports maintenance of Laboratory Accreditation. Participates in continuing education by attending department meetings and in-services. Develops working relationships with Medical and Nursing staff and provides verbal consults. Provides superior customer service and safe patient care. Participates in departmental workflow and project initiatives related to electronic health records or other projects. Performs EHR data entry as needed for patient service. Ensures proper PPE is worn as required and follows donning/doffing procedures. Completes routine cleaning and decontamination processes and maintains patient, visitor, employee, and external customer satisfaction. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Laboratory Director and leadership team. Provides guidance and support to staff in the delivery of laboratory services. Adheres to quality assurance by performing and documenting all quality control activities, calibrations and maintenance. Maintains skills and knowledge for testing methods, instrument use, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration procedures related to each test performed. Stays informed about factors that influence test results and evaluates the validity of patient results. Maintains inventory control to ensure adequate supplies and reagents for continuous operation. Participates in laboratory training for non-laboratory personnel or student programs and supports maintenance of Laboratory Accreditation. Participates in continuing education by attending department meetings and in-services. Develops and maintains working relationships with Medical and Nursing staff and provides verbal consultations. Provides superior customer service and safe patient care. Participates in departmental workflow related to electronic health records or other project initiatives. Maintains continuous communication with colleagues between shifts and leadership team. Responsible for electronic health records data entry pertinent to patient service role. Ensures PPE is worn as required and follows donning/doffing procedures. Completes routine cleaning and decontamination processes for surfaces contaminated by a communicable disease. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the Director of Laboratory Services and leadership team. Provides guidance and support to fellow Medical Laboratory Scientists and other staff in the delivery of laboratory services.
