General Statement of Job
Performs a variety of duties in the preparation and service of meals to students, staff and visitors.
Maintains the cleanliness of the kitchen and cafeteria areas and performs related duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assists in the preparation of meal portions, including cooking and baking using various utensils and appliances; may perform specialized duties such as baking, frying, broiling, or preparing meats, vegetables, salads, desserts, sandwiches, etc.
Arranges food and beverage items (e.g., placing in steam tables, a la carte trays, filing racks, mobile carts) to make items available to students and staff. Operates and/or utilizes appliances such as ovens, stoves, mixers, dish washers, deep fryers, etc.
Prepares and serves food and beverage items according to approved recipes, meeting mandated nutritional and health requirements and projected meal needs.
Serves students and staff at the cafeteria counter; keeps dispensing and related equipment full and operational. Evaluates appearance and temperature of food; inspects food items, work areas, etc., to prevent cross‑contamination.
Washes dishes; clears counters; sweeps and mops floors; cleans freezers, coolers, storage areas; cleans kitchen appliances; maintains garbage collection areas.
Stocks food, condiments and supplies, maintaining adequate quantities and security. Stores stock safely and reports equipment malfunctions.
Performs duties in compliance with safety and health standards at all times.
Minimum Training and Experience High school graduate or equivalent with demonstrated aptitude for successful performance of job duties; prior food service experience preferred.
Job Requirements Knowledge : All standards and regulations pertaining to food service/preparation and sanitation; methods, procedures and activities involved in lunchroom duties; productivity and quality standards; safety precautions for working with food equipment and materials.
Skills / Effort : Ability to conduct food preparation and service efficiently and timely in accordance with regulations, interact effectively with co‑workers, supervisors, students, teachers and the public, operate and utilize food service equipment safely, maintain areas, equipment and utensils.
Physical, Cognitive, and Other Requirements : Continuous walking, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, reaching, lifting (20–50 lb); manual dexterity; reading, hearing, speaking, writing, problem‑solving; color/texture discrimination; coordination; ability to follow directions and adapt to stressors.
Working Conditions : Cafeteria/kitchen environment with heat, cold, equipment, smoke and steam; stress related to tight deadlines; ability to lift/move up to 50 lb; operation of standard food service equipment.
Responsibility: No budgetary or supervisory responsibility.
