The Schaumburg Township District Library is looking for
a Youth Librarian
to join our team. This position will be working 37.5 average hours per week, with rotating weekends. The schedules are based on the needs of the library and could change if and when needed.
The annual salary range for this position is $57,837-$69,400 based on skills and qualifications. Our schedules are based on the needs of the library and could change if and when needed.

Position Summary The Youth Librarian is responsible for developing, facilitating, and evaluating programs and services for patrons ages 0-14. The Youth Librarian is responsible for assessing and fulfilling patrons' needs for information and materials. This position fosters community connections and promotes an inclusive, positive environment for young people.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Professional:
Create and implement age-appropriate programs and services, and evaluate impact and effectiveness through outcome-based measures.
Develop and conduct tours, presentations, and off-site outreach.
Coordinate with the Community Outreach Librarians to assist with outreach to youth and other community youth-focused partners.
Work with other library departments to develop large-scale intergenerational programs.
Lead or assist in the design, implementation, and evaluation of new services and programs that support library initiatives, department objectives, and community demand.
Provide information, reference services, and readers’ advisory to a diverse population. Be a creative problem solver who takes responsibility to satisfy a patron’s request.
Assess patrons’ needs effectively, either in person, over the phone, or in writing.
Work with all ages effectively.
Give information, based on a primary source from a reliable authority.
Serve as “Person in Charge” of the Library, in the absence of the director and department heads.
Manage and complete special projects, as requested.
Collection:
Maintain working knowledge of the Library's reference tools and materials, the online catalog, Internet resources, and social media.
Instruct patrons in the use of the Library's reference tools and materials, the online catalog, and the Internet.
Maintain working knowledge of the Library's circulating collection.
Community:
Stay informed about the names of officials, organizations, clubs, businesses, schools, social agencies, etc, in the greater Schaumburg area.
Keep apprised of popular trends inside and outside of the library world and apply best practices.
Keep apprised of the offerings of neighboring public and special libraries.
Other Duties:
Maintain professional involvement in the library science industry.
Refine or enhance reference skills by reading professional literature and attending seminars, workshops, and professional meetings.
Represent the Library at regional and national professional meetings; attend meetings and training as required or requested.
Keep current on the theories of child and adolescent learning, literacy, and brain development, and their application to library services.
Keep current on age-appropriate trends, emerging technologies, issues, and research in librarianship, education, and allied fields.
Record and analyze statistics, and write reports as needed.
Participate in library-wide committees and attend monthly meetings.
Other duties as assigned.
Abide by the Standards of Excellence for employees and policies and procedures of the Library.
Treat all patrons and employees fairly and with an open mind.
Maintain patron and employee confidentiality.
Communicate clearly in all formats: in person, via the telephone, and in writing.
Utilize positive conflict-resolution strategies while working through difficult interactions with patrons and/or co-workers.
Manage time to maximize productivity; work individually in a self-directed manner and as part of a team.
Maintain the flexibility and a willingness to work in a dynamic, busy, and changing environment.
Be a Library Ambassador with the patron, out in the community, and with our co-workers.
Education and/or experience Master of Library Science (MLS degree) from an accredited ALA-accredited university or school. Experience developing programs and age-appropriate services for children ages 0-14 years old. Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications is required.
