Charge Registered Nurse (RN) II - PACU Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital is hiring a Charge Registered Nurse (RN) II – PACU. The position requires a licensed Registered Nurse who is at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner’s model of clinical practice. The Charge Nurse creates a safe patient‑care environment, serves as a role model and coach to department personnel, and leads unit leadership activities.

Qualifications

Education Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s).

Experience Twenty‑four months of clinical nursing experience with progressive leadership skills.

Licenses & Certifications

Required: • RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure (Texas Board of Nursing) • PSV Compact Licensure – Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing residency) • BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) • ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA)

Preferred: • PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Instructor (AHA) if caring for pediatric patients • Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification

Skills & Abilities

Proficient in skills and competencies verified through ongoing assessments.

Functional English proficiency (speaking, reading, writing) necessary for patient or employee safety.

Effective communication with patients, physicians, families, and coworkers in a customer‑service manner.

Strong assessment, organizational, and problem‑solving skills with the ability to prioritize tasks.

Ability to act independently and exercise judgment in interactions with the health‑care team.

Uses critical thinking and clinical judgment in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act.

Proficient time‑management and highly developed assessment skills.

Knowledge of Nursing Unit Dashboard and HCAHPS scores.

Expertise in operating the electronic medical record.

Professional contributions as defined in the Clinical Career Path program guide.

Essential Functions People Essential Functions

Foster staff engagement through active listening, equitable decision‑making, and staff support, improving turnover/retention scores.

Model consistent leadership skills, coach staff on effective communication, and participate in performance reviews.

Mentor and oversee students, new employees, and preceptors; resolve conflicts with patients, families, and inter‑professional team members.

Service Essential Functions

Lead patient and family‑centered care standards per Houston Methodist nursing practice documents; audit plan of care.

Maintain ongoing interactions with patients, families, and staff to improve patient care through leader rounding.

Drive department service standards to improve patient satisfaction scores.

Quality/Safety Essential Functions

Model standards of care, participate in quality improvement, and use teachable moments to enhance safety.

Coordinate nursing care across the shift, ensuring timely, accurate documentation and patient flow.

Respond to rapid response, CERTs, and emergency codes; collaborate with the inter‑professional team on safety initiatives.

Report near–misses and contribute to safety scorecards.

Finance Essential Functions

Implement strategies to meet financial targets via timely documentation, reduced length of stay, and efficient resource use.

Attend daily care coordination rounds and manage productivity per staffing grid.

Provide input on unit resource utilization and oversee shift‑by‑shift allocation of staff and supplies.

Growth/Innovation Essential Functions

Lead and participate in unit projects and shared governance activities to identify and implement improvements that reduce readmissions and improve operations.

Expand nursing knowledge, develop educational resources, and promote evidence‑based practices.
