Job Summary

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs a variety of activities designed to service, repair and maintain city-owned heavy equipment. The work is performed through the application of a body of knowledge and specific certifications that denote expertise in heavy equipment maintenance. The mechanic performs a range of maintenance, repair and service activities on all heavy equipment, using considerable independent judgment in making decisions without the availability of supervision.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Received supervision from the Equipment Maintenance Manager.

Responsibilities Perform maintenance and repair activities on a wide variety of heavy equipment, including but not limited to heavy-duty trucks, material spreaders, excavators, skidders, high pressure pumps, bulldozers, graders, underbody blades, dump bodies, crawler tractors and trailers, compactors, backhoes, street sweepers, aerial towers, man lifts, and more.

Diagnose, service and repair various systems found on pieces of heavy equipment such as mechanical and computer electronic controls, air brake systems, transmissions, computer controlled automatic transmissions, high voltage generators, propane powered equipment and pneumatic systems.

Brakes: Repair or replace shoes, pads, drums, hoses, calipers, cylinders, and heavy-duty air brakes.

Cooling: Flush radiator, replace hoses and thermostat, repair or replace radiator and water pump, fan drives, DCA treatment filters, air intercoolers and oil coolers.

Drive: Repair and replace drive shaft, differential, axle, manual, automatic and sophisticated computer-controlled transmissions, clutches, transfer cases, power take-off systems, transmission reversers, all-wheel drive steering axles and final drives.

Electrical: Repair or replace fuses, batteries, lights, instruments, warning devices, controls and switches, computer controls, modules, alternators, starters and defective cables and wiring. This includes 12 and 24-volt systems.

Exhaust and Emissions Control: Replace mufflers, manifolds, catalytic converters, turbochargers, blowers and pipes. Be knowledgeable in modern DPF and SCR systems.

Heating and Air Conditioning: Repair or replace heater cores, condensers, compressors, hoses and controls; recharge air conditioning systems.

Hydraulic: Repair or replace pumps, hoses, valves, winches and cylinders.

Air: Repair or replace compressors, air dryers, brake valves, air tanks and hoses.

Steering and Suspension System: Repair or replace tie rods, ball joints, gear boxes, shock absorbers, springs, steering linkage, kingpins, power steering, hoses, pumps, walking beam suspensions and air suspensions.

Coupling Devices: Adjust, repair, inspect and replace fifth wheel hitches and pintle hitches. Overhaul engines, replace engines and rebuild components.

Maintain service logs and records of maintenance on vehicles and motorized equipment, using fleet maintenance and management software.

Prepare work orders and cost materials estimates.

Keep tools, equipment and work area clean, organized and in good working condition.

May assist in training lower-level workers in mechanical repair techniques.

Road test vehicles.

Provide instruction and training in the proper methods and processes necessary to perform equipment repair, inspection and preventive maintenance.

Assist other mechanics with the more difficult assignments.

Perform related work as assigned.

Qualifications Knowledge of:

Standard practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and engines.

Safety issues in the use of tools, equipment and supplies used in repair of motorized vehicles and equipment.

Body and frame construction.

Ability to:

Operate a variety of hand tools and gas and electric welding equipment.

Operate mechanized tools, jacks, and hoists, and a variety of diagnostic testing equipment.

Diagnose mechanical, electrical and hydraulic malfunctions.

Read and understand manuals and schematics.

Rebuild engines and major driveline components.

Traverse tough terrain.

Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:

Making observations

Reading and writing

Operating and maintaining assigned equipment

Communicating with others

Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of:

Making sound decisions

Determining and avoiding dangerous situations

Interpreting written communication including drawings

Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:

Walking, stooping, kneeling, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time

Crawling or climbing as it pertains to maintenance or repairs, lifting various heavy materials and equipment

Operating assigned equipment

Effectively deal with personal danger which may include exposure to:

Hazardous and toxic chemicals and materials

Various fumes

Electrical hazards

Confined or high work places

Various weather conditions

Temperature extremes

Extremely loud noises

Hazards associated with working in and near traffic

Experience and Training Guidelines Experience:

Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment.

Training:

Must have completed the twelfth grade and possess a high school diploma, or have a GED.

Possession of an Associate’s Degree in Heavy Duty Truck/Heavy Equipment Repair. Degree may be substituted for two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment.

Licenses and Certifications:

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Commercial Driver’s License, within six (6) months of employment.
