Job Description Jefferson Community College invites applications for a
full-time, tenure-track Instructor of Biology
within the STEM, Health Professions, and Business Division. This position offers an exciting opportunity to teach courses in microbiology, genetics, and molecular and cell biology for majors, beginning
fall 2026 .
The role encompasses curriculum design, classroom, and laboratory instruction. Each faculty member is expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to student success, academic excellence, and community engagement, while actively contributing to the College's Strategic Plan and collaborating with colleagues and institutional leadership. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in promoting a high-impact program that prepares students for rewarding careers in STEM and Health Professions.
Responsibilities
Teach a minimum of 18 contact hours per semester and maintain 7 office hours each week to assist and mentor students
Prepare and deliver dynamic instruction through various modalities in lecture and lab settings primarily weekdays but may include nights and weekends
Utilize the Brightspace learning management system for course administration
Assess student learning outcomes at course and program levels and use data to drive continuous improvement aligned with institutional goals and general education standards
Guide students through academic planning, career readiness, and inclusive, student-centered learning experiences
Participate in professional development to stay current with new developments in the field of biology and teaching, and learning
Engage in community and college service to advance the mission and vision of the college
Applicants must interact and communicate effectively with diverse populations, foster inclusion, and promote equal access and treatment for groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
Required Qualifications
Master's degree in Biology or biology‑related discipline with a minimum of 15 graduate semester hours in the field of specialization
Teaching experience in higher education
Preferred Qualifications
Master's or Doctoral degree in biology or a biology‑related discipline
Experience teaching across multiple subjects and modalities, including curriculum development and course design
Expertise in creating and delivering laboratory and experiential learning activities
Background in primary research and/or mentoring in fieldwork or laboratory settings
Knowledge of best practices in pedagogy and assessment to enhance teaching and learning
Ability to teach Microbiology, Genetics, and Introductory Cellular Biology for majors
Proficiency in diverse teaching methods for lecture and lab environments
Strong written and oral communication skills
Experience teaching online and/or hybrid courses
Demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth
Understanding and support of the mission and values of the community college
Special Working Conditions
Exposure to biology laboratory chemicals, preserved specimens, and BSL-2 specimens
May require teaching some evenings or weekends
May require driving of college vehicles for field trips and/or off-campus meetings
$50,000-$52,000/yr. for well-qualified individuals. Salary is determined based upon experience and education in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement as well as internal equity. The College offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, vision, and dental insurance, long‑term disability, generous leave policies, paid holidays, pre‑tax flexible spending accounts, tax‑deferred compensation, NYS retirement, as well as employee and dependent tuition waivers; may qualify for public service loan forgiveness.
