Job Overview
Posting Note: The Genetic Counselor Assistant (GCA) supports the expansion of clinical genomic services in a pediatric Clinical Genomics Laboratory. The role operates Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with increased remote flexibility after training. The GCA collaborates with genetic counselors, laboratory leadership, clinical teams, and patient families to coordinate test orders, specimen tracking, documentation, and communication. The position offers exposure to clinical genetics and opportunities for professional growth within a mission‑driven organization.
Position Duties
Track genetic test orders and specimen status to ensure timely processing and follow‑up.
Coordinate outreach for specimen collection and consent forms under guidance of genetic counselors.
Communicate with providers about test status, insurance authorization, and documentation.
Assist genetic counselors in drafting reports and literature reviews for variant interpretation.
Serve as liaison between providers and patients to coordinate communication and case updates.
Develop educational materials and assist students in training activities and case preparation.
Perform miscellaneous job‑related duties as requested.
Qualifications Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Health Sciences, or related field.
Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling (completed or in progress) – preferred.
Coursework or training in Human Genetics, Medical Terminology, Genomics, healthcare operations, laboratory documentation, or compliance standards – preferred.
Experience Requirements:
Experience in a clinical laboratory or healthcare environment – preferred.
Familiarity with genetic terminology and variant interpretation concepts – preferred.
Knowledge of insurance authorization and financial clearance processes – preferred.
Experience communicating with patients and healthcare providers – preferred.
Exposure to clinical research or data entry systems – preferred.
Special Skills:
Strong multitasking, professional communication, typing, writing, and speaking skills with excellent English composition.
Proficiency in electronic medical record software and Microsoft Office applications.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and patients/families.
Reliability, punctuality, preparedness for all shifts and work‑related activities.
Good judgment, organization, initiative, attention to detail, discretion, and modesty in performance of duties.
